Vibia's lips quirked in amusement. No, nobody was born freed. She'd worked hard for her freedom...and paid for it, dearly. Her life was not her own - not even now, so many years later. The fee she'd paid to the Collegium was a heavy one and it often felt as if she'd gone from one form of slavery to another, although this one perpetually felt more worrisome. She was working for one gang and spying for another. If the Syndicate ever found out...she shook the thought from her head and plastered that utterly convincing smirk on her face.
She watched the exchange between Tiberius and Marcus with light amusement. The latter was clearly more adept and as he upped, with a wink to her own company, she chuckled and watched them depart. She presumed Tiberius was nervous and so decided, not for the first time that evening, took the initiative. She pulled herself up to stand and gestured for a slave to pick up her cithara. She swooped down to pick up her cup of wine (flashing a purposeful eyeful of cleavage as she did so), and raised it to her lips. When she pulled it back she gave Tiberius a gentle smile. "After you, sir. And you'll have to point out the various beautiful parts of your home on our walk to your rooms. If the rest of it is as majestic as this..."

She glanced at Marcus as Tiberius gestured to him, a smile on her lips and nodded. She understood the need for space although it was at a premium in this city, even in somewhere as glamorous as the Venus. "Very comfortable." She nodded with a feline smile and sipped her wine. It was excellent. "Although missing a woman's touch, I think." It was probably - to most - bold to crictisie the furnishing of an Imperial villa but she trusted Tiberius not to take offence. Her whole role, whilst mostly a charade, was to live on the fringes of respectfulness and politeness. She had said far worse to almost equally important men. Some even liked it.
She flicked her eyes over the scene opposite her, Liana revelling in Marcus' touch and words. She was a sweet girl, and pliant, and likely suited to her role less so than the wily Vibia but for somebody like Marcus she was perfect. But Tiberius asked her a question and her gaze drew from the couple on the couch opposite to her cithara next to them. Her smile was genuine, but slightly amused. "I haven't always been a freedwoman." She explained and drew herself up to sit a little more, a touch closer to him. "It behove me to learn skills other than sweeping or dusting or serving at a cena." She cast a brief glance at the slaves in attendance tonight, "But now I get to play for pleasure. I'm pleased you enjoyed it, and only sorry we didn't get to meet at your gathering." Placing her wine cup on the table she glanced back to the cithara and then at Marcus and Liana pointedly. "Would you like me to play for you? Perhaps somewhere more private?" He didn't seem the type for an orgy in the triclinium.

Vibia knew how to play the game, she'd been playing it since she was a slave girl in her masters bed and now, a decade later she knew just the right sort of smile and laugh and slight narrowing of her eyes that played well to different types of men. Marcus was a known quantity - he'd made no secret of the fact he wanted her, which was fun, but couldn't distract her tonight. Tiberius had been utterly known until she'd clocked him as she walked in. Nobody had explicitly said it was his first time but as far as she was aware nobody from the Venus had been hired for him before, and she doubted he would have had a simple slave girl for his first. Not when he could afford the best.
"You're too kind, really we rolled out of bed looking like this, this morning. No effort at all." She said with light amusement as the women wove their way in between the couches and she sat herself a slightly discrete distance away from Tiberius, mentally running through which approach would work best. She almost envied Liana the easier job of Marcus - his desires seemed fairly plain to see. Settling on a softer approach she gestured for the slave to set her cithara down at the end of the couches so she could take it up if necessary, and thought some conversation would probably help settle his nerves. She glanced at Tiberius with a soft smile. "You've recently moved from the palace I understand?" She arched a brow and took up a cup of wine, sipping it gently. "And what, might I ask, prompted two young men move from luxury to this nirvana?"
As she spoke, she curled one leg up under herself and leant onto the arm of the couch furthest away from Tiberius, accentuating the long line of her body and the curve between her chest and her hips. Nobody could ever say Vibia wasn't a professional.

Vibia glanced around, long white blonde hair falling over her shoulder and to her hips as she studied the world beyond that subtle door in the Gardens of Sallust. An Imperial invitation was absolutely not one she was going to turn down, and bless Marcus Junius Silanus for thinking of her. He'd made it plain she was for the Prince, but he wanted somebody for himself and so she walked, arm in arm with a beautiful dark-eyed, dark-haired beauty through into the villa. They looked like fire and ice, perfect opposites. Where her body was artfully curved and her features were pale and delicate with doe blue eyes and blonde hair, Liana was olive skinned and willowy with striking features. A perfect pair for the wealthy, she thought.
Slaves, neatly dressed and unobtrusive, milled about before shepherding the two ladies into the villa and the corridors beyond. Vibia held up her hand to halt the men and slipped off the thick cloak she was wearing. Liana did the same. They were both dressed in exquisite Assyrian silk that, depending on how many times you folded it could be utterly transparent or fully opaque. She left it somewhere in the middle for her chiton, revealing the outline of her shape and the curve of her thighs and chest, sheathed in shimmering silk. It would be far, far too immodest for a proper Roman matron but neither woman was that. Liana's was silver. They were both bedecked in ornate jewellery as well, so as they rounded a corner into a receiving room - lamps dimmed and male voices floating to meet them, she grinned. Their dress and preening had most definitely been the correct call.
Inclining her head just a touch, she pulled her eyes up and surveyed the men. She recognised Silanus from the other one's amusing party, although for that she'd been hired for other skills - which she also thought she might be requested for tonight - hence why one of the slaves carried her cithara. Her eyes drew to the darker haired man and the smile on her lips became feline and suggestive. "Sirs. Thank your the invitation. I hope Liana and I didn't keep you waiting?"

"Your poem was beautiful." She grinned at the memory of the scrawl she'd seen on the wall and drew to a stop, leaning up on her toes to leave a languorous kiss on his lips, her fingers sliding into his ash-dusted hair.
She pulled back after a few heated moments although not for the first time, she felt drawn to drag him into the nearest alley. She resisted the urge. Just about. And instead glanced to the man he indicated across the street. Tall, a bit lean, and with a hesitant look. She wrinkled her nose. Maybe his first time. "Fine choice." Better than an arrogant older man that demanded the very best. A young, naive sort was much easier. She dropped her hand to his though, giving it a brief squeeze. "Come and see me soon though?"

Yes, he did care about his friends reputation. Oddly so. She stored that bit of information with the rest and gave him a tight smile that quickly morphed into a more genuine one as they fell back onto safer pastures.
"As long as he can afford me, I don't mind. I figure you might have better taste than some," She grinned, "Seeing as you, yourself, were such a catch before you threw it all away." She stood with languid movements, sliding her legs from his lap and picking up the wine cup. It was a cheap clay thing and she felt no qualms about stealing it as she jerked her head for him to follow her back towards the Venus and the smouldering ruin of the place next door.
Her eyes scanned the crowds outside. Drunk and middle aged and utterly uninspiring. She wrinkled her nose. "Can you not just...take out a loan for me?" She glanced up at him, "Surely I'm worth it?"

She arched a brow at the firmness of his words and met his serious look with a challenging one of her own. She was not a woman that (generally) stood for being told off. She'd remember this moment, and the name of the girl. Ovinia. Something was afoot. Maybe she should ask Helios, see if he knew anything. "Remember," She said seriously, as she bent at the waist to pick up her wine, "I'm here out of friendship. You should think more carefully about how you choose to talk to your friends."
But the moment passed after another beat of stern awkwardness. "Oh I don't know," She chuckled, twisting back into the positive, seductive, upbeat Vibia she so often was. The mask had slipped though, just for a moment, "How about you escort me home and pick out somebody fun for my evening activity?"

-
Vibia scoffed and tossed her long white blonde hair over her shoulder. "Please." She gave Lucius an amused look, "As if all you care about is personality. I have a terrible personality and yet you still like me." She gave him a challenging grin and then nudged him on his hip with her outstretched foot.
"But if you want to be boring and not show our red-headed friend a good time then you shall have to be more entertaining company for me." She gave him a gentler smile. "Or else I shall have to scrawl on the walls of Rome that Lucius has been turned into a moping fool by...what was her name again? Olivia? Ovinia?"
TAG: @Chevi
-
Vibia quirked a brow at him and then rolled her eyes dramatically. "You must be the only young man in Rome that doesn't have sex on his mind all the time. Yes, right now."
She considered the woman - all big dark eyes and long red hair, freckles and a fantastic pair of breasts not very well hidden in the folds of her chiton. She didn't look like a prostitute (Vibia had an eye for that sort of thing), so perhaps the poor beleaguered wife of somebody currently drinking themselves to death in here? Or a girl out for drinks with her friends? She narrowed her eyes. Yes. "If she wasn't free, she wouldn't be in here - no husband is going to let a woman like that out alone in a popina. I think she's waiting for some girlfriends, probably to commiserate one of their husbands or a shitty day at work." She grinned. "Why?" She narrowed her eyes at Lucius, "Not your type?"
TAG: @Chevi
-
"I've said it before and I'll say it again, with skills like yours you could charge, let alone get a girl for free." She grinned and reclined back in her seat now he'd perked up and stopped moping. At least for a moment. Ovinia. She committed the name to memory - she wasn't much in the business of selling secrets, the Collegium rather she gave them information on the Syndicate, but information was power and Vibia was like a magpie in that regard, collecting useful scraps as much as she could.
"Fine," she tossed her long blonde hair over her shoulder and peered around. "Any of the women in this place would be a challenge now they've seen you with me." She smirked. She had a powerful impact on men...which meant, in turn, she had an equally powerful but overall far more negative effect on women. "Which one takes your fancy?" She scanned over their faces until she caught one. "What about the red-head at the bar?"

Lucius had been working with the vigiles for several months, but he had to admit he had never seen them hop to work so fast and with so much enthusiasm as when the news came in that the Venus was on fire. And it barely tampered their heroic spirit when they found out that the fire, thank the gods, was only near the Venus, but not actually in it. It also did not make them any less helpful to know that there was not a single man among the rank and file vigiles that would have been able to afford a girl or boy from the Venus. It was the principle, after all. And maybe a faint hope of reward.
The building next to the Venus caught from a cooking fire, as far as they could tell. The centurion on the scene immediately ordered the vigiles to start pulling down the burning parts of the roof, and sent some to cover the adjacent roof with water-soaked skins and blankets, to prevent the Venus from catching from the sparks. People stood by, watching the scene unfold; even some of the girls and the clients came out of the Venus, looking nervous.
Lucius was standing at the building's doorway, part of the bucket brigade that was passing down water from the nearby fountain. Smoke and sparks flew everywhere, and made him tear up, even with the scarf over his mouth and nose.
"Are we sure there is no one inside?..."

I Want It That Way
Started by Lucius Armenius Valerius ·
January, 77 AD
He was not looking to move to the Esquiline, because there were homes on the Quirinial Hill that were closer to the Absidata. And if he was going to have a brothel in that area, he wanted to live close by. Although since he currently lived in a hospitia, he toyed with the idea of opening his own and maybe with some additional services to those who stayed there. That’s if he didn’t choose to buy the Elysium back, which was still something he considered. He hated that it had fallen into disrepair like that, that it looked so bad. His childhood home, ruined for good.
He hadn’t returned since that day he encountered Ione though. Rome was a huge city and he had many places to revisit and much gossip to pick up. One old comrade, or whatever you’d call him, had moved ranks too and had friends higher up too. He suggested Lucius should join him at this party he was invited to, said there’d be all sorts of people, high and low. It was in a private home on the Esquiline though, so there he went. Wearing his best clothes, a knee-long tunica and a toga, mostly in dark blue, which suited his eyes and his slightly greying hair well.
Once inside, he said his goodbyes to Publius, who brought him here and they might catch up more later. They already had a drink in Publius’ home, but this party looked promising too. He could see what the other meant, that there were all sorts of people here. Lucius made his way to the triclinium, where there was an empty couch and he claimed it instantly. Picking up a bit of food from the table and looking around, until his eyes fell on a beautiful blonde playing the cithara and singing. Her hair was down and although she was finely dressed, he knew a prostitute when he saw one. Perhaps this one was more like a courtesan of sorts, she looked almost regal.
But there were other people too. An already half-drunk Senator fell down into one of the other couches and gave Lucius a look, “Salve, haven’t seen you before.” The man simply said and looked to see who had caught Lucius’ attention, “Oh, you know Vibia? She is a joy…” The Senator grinned and waved at her to join him and Lucius tilted his head when she stood and approached them. Interested already.

Happy Holidays!

Saturnalia, 76AD
Vibia stifled a yawn behind her fingers and tried to blink the sleep out of her eyes. Saturnalia might be fun for the slaves and the plebs but it was the Venus' busiest time of year, and perhaps its most unpleasant. The most generous of (rich) masters often doled out gifts to their most valuable, trusted slaves which sometimes involved a night with a beauty from the Venus. They had poorer manners than her usual class of clientele and seemed to want to savour every minute that they paid for. It was exhausting, and so it took her almost the full day to be ready (and willing) to work after sleeping, visiting the baths and tidying her rooms from the detritus her clients left.
Now though, the sun had dipped well past the horizon and evening was drawing in. She could hear the tell-tale sounds of Rome's best and brightest being...entertained in the rooms down the corridor but Vibia herself was led resplendent on one of the couches in the main room, fingers softly trilling her cithara. A few of her colleagues; men and women alike milled around, entertaining the guests of the clients being seen too and likewise trying to prop themselves awake. A woman's work was never done, and particularly not a whore's on Saturnalia. The familiar jangle of the bells that overhung the front door sounded and Vibia lazily dragged her eyes up to see a new client walk in. Interesting.

Party People

December 19th - Saturnalia - 76AD
Vibia loved Saturnalia, if only because it meant her coin purse was fatter than any other time in the year and the men she serviced were more pliable. So she suffered through the parties and the late nights, stifling yawns behind her hand and blinking sleep from her eyes because it'd be worth it in the end. It's how she found herself in a domus on the Quirinal surrounded by rich men; their wives shunted off for the evening. There were others here too, not just prostitutes for the inevitable orgy but Gladiators - dressed up in their regalia, and Charioteers too - undoubtedly plying for patronage as much as the girls and boys she was with were.
Most of the men were in the gardens, downing their cups of wine and grinning lovely, lascivious grins at their guests. Vibia sniffed and made a beeline for the triclinium, hoping to find something more interesting to do than a sweaty old man - no matter how rich he was. Picking a cup of watered wine from a slave she made her way to the corner of the room, surveying the scene. There was a big burly gladiator in the centre being pawed over by men - ostensibly to check his pedigree for patronage but only a fool wouldn't see that the men were taking their sweet time checking his muscle tone. There were a few people in idle conversation and in the opposite corner there was a little man who seemed to want to be anywhere else. Or at least it seemed that way to her. Curious.
Taking a sip and weaving through the crowds, the flimsy cut of her dress leaving trails of fabric, she sidled up to him. "You don't belong here, do you?"

A Good Goodbye [M]
Started by Vibia ·
November, 76AD
Vibia yawned and then stretched - elongating every muscle of her body with a satisfied 'mhmm' sound before collapsing back into the den of silks and sheets that made up her bed. Or...it used to make up her bed, in neat and orderly fashion but she and Lucius had left it in a heap that strew not only the surface but the floor...along with the chiton she'd been wearing, and his own clothes. Now safely ensconced within the sheets, fire in the corner of the room burning and incense sticks fragrancing the space, she felt utterly content. Well...content besides one particular bone she had to pick with the young man next to her.
Propping her jaw in her palm she shifted onto her side and peered down at him. "You're telling me that this is not worth staying a patrician for?" The smile tugged on her lips and she arched a brow, amused. "I have equite friends," A polite euphemism for clients, "Too you know. Just not bankrupt ones. You stay rich and this doesn't have to be goodbye." He hadn't told her his plans, they hadn't exactly had time before they got...down to things, but the news had reached her fairly quickly after it became public. He was one of her favourites; young, attractive, good in bed and fun which was a bonus very few in her profession got to enjoy. It was a loss to her - and not just financial, although she wasn't foolish as to get sentimental or anything about it.
"I trust you've paid for a full afternoon though, if you're set on this path. Make it a proper farewell."

One magic autumn eve
Started by Tiberius Claudius Sabucius ·
September 76 AD
It was still pleasant out, though a little brisker than the height of summer, but warm enough that the gardens could still be enjoyed in the evening, the spaces set aside for the party warmed by strategically placed braziers and lit by taller torches. They gave a flickering light, sometimes gentle and sometimes casting odd shadows, but adding a playful and at the same time primal air to the event.
Invitees had never-the-less been encouraged to bring a warm cloak, toga or palla, just in case. But it was meant to be a relaxed evening, not a stuffy, formal event. In his ponderings over the illnesses of Caesar's past, Tiberius had developed a hypothesis that one potential cause could be stress, and so this evening was meant to be something of a stress relief, a fun and fanciful time with friends, particularly for Titus. He'd invited their siblings and cousins, along with their peers. None of the older generation, whom he'd been accustomed to thinking of as the 'adults', because suddenly he and his were adults. There would be other, formal events for all generations in the near future, he was certain.
Food had been organised, not a multi-course, reclined cena but rather platters of tasty, nibbly delicacies, carried by slaves or placed on strategic stone tables. Other slaves carried pitchers of wine, ranging from the vinyards along the Tiber through to Greek vintages, and elegant glass cups were available to drink from. Tiberius had asked Marcus Junius Silanus to organise entertainment, and already a flautist was playing a merry tune by one brazier, whilst nearby a juggler tossed coloured leather balls in increasingly complex patterns whilst balancing another on their nose.
The layout of the gardens meant that there were several spaces, corners for conversation or the central area for lively conviviality. Here and there Praetorian Guards were unobtrusive in the shadows, keeping an eye on their Imperial charges, whilst more screened entrants at the gates. Once inside, the gardens seemed almost magical.

Work dinner
Started by Lucius Manius Victorius Roscianus ·
July, 76 CE
It was high summer, and the nobility of Rome was fleeing the city in droves. Lucius would have left too to visit the estate, except Gaius wanted to keep a close watch on him until the ed of the year, the infamous deadline to figure out what he wanted to do with his life (and for his family). There was only one loophole in this situation: many young, unmarried men Lucius' age (a dwindling number but still there) organized parties at their villas outside the city, inviting each other along for some well deserved networking and debauchery. It was a loophole Lucius decided to take advantage of. Spending time with his peers and building connections? Gaius could not argue with that. Leaving the city and spending free time at a villa? Much better than July on the Quirinal. Maybe he should have been a lawyer.
This current party was in full swing, bordering on orgy. The cool night air freshened everyone up, the wine had been filled and refilled several times, there was music, and, obviously, there were men and women hired for entertainment. And still, with all the luxury and the spices, the party was still painfully boring, in Lucius' opinion. Conversations were bland (sliding into ridiculous as some held their liquor worse than others), drinking games got boring quick, and there was not much else to do. Lucius managed to slip away from the crowd, wandering around the gardens of the villa for a while, getting some fresh air. He came across the small bath building attached to the main house and peeked in, but someone was already... being occupied in there, so he backed out, and decided to return to the trees instead. Maybe there were a few apples left somewhere to pick. Pulling himself up into the lower branches of one promising tree, he looked around in the light of torches that filtered out into the garden.

In honor of the Volturnalia, Secundus had joined in the day’s public festivities. Senators were expected to make appearances at these things; they represented most of a man’s religious life, so he performed the necessary civic duties. However, this year, he most looked forward to the night’s festivities. Secundus had been planning this party for many days now. Several of the men of the senate had been invited to join in. It would be a night of feasting, drinking, games, and music.
Livia, as usual, had taken no interest in helping him plan the occasion. She considered any time spent with him wasted time. Secundus did not mind that. It made his plan easier. He could arrange for Vibia to perform as the night’s entertainment without it rising to his wife’s notice any sooner than the party itself. Although he only planned her to use her skills with the cithara, if any of the other guests took her up on another offer, he had not intention to stop them.
Secundus hoped that Livia would guess what Vibia was. He imagined her affronted expression vividly as he supervised his slaves’ preparations. He wanted to provoke a reaction from her- something other than the meek, mouselike behavior of recent months. For someone so bitter and angry, she insisted on remaining dormant. Perhaps she was waiting for him to show weakness. He would force her to play her hand first.
As the day’s festivities began to come to close, Secundus watched as the household finished its preparations. The party would begin soon; if everything went as planned, Vibia would be the first to arrive, with senators filing in very shortly after. Livia, who had been in her room all day, would likely want to be ready to greet their guests. He told one of the slaves to go fetch her- no need to disturb her mood before she’d had a chance to meet their guest of honor

In Confidence [M]
Started by Sara ·
Mid-August, 75AD
Vibia primped and preened as she always did before a client. Her various pots of lotions and potions and cosmetics were well used but still did the job as she etched kohl around her bright blue eyes and dabbed rosewater on her throat and between her thighs. There was no need to spend hours agonising over an outfit choice for this job, however. This wasn't the first time Secundus had visited her, and she knew him well enough to know what he liked. There was also the chance that perhaps the nature of her job wouldn't come into play at all, and he'd just be after conversation. But not being an oracle and knowing for definite, she still dressed in her usual sort of attire of a gauzy tunica that revealed more than a hint of what curves lurked underneath, with her rare, bright blonde hair half pulled up and half left to trail in waves over her shoulders and down her back.
She made no move to attend the atrium where clients mingled and chose girls, and instead stayed in her room. Secundus knew the way, and this was a pre-booked arrangement. No need to parade herself this evening like cattle ready and waiting to be picked.
Instead, she reclined on her bed, fingers twirling through a strand of her hair as she glanced at nothing in particular. Secundus was better than some but worse than others, not that it really mattered. She wasn't a slave and thus had more say in the clients she serviced but ultimately her employment rested on her willingness to service all who chose her. Besides, the man was useful. Whilst she didn't - or hadn't - sold any of his secrets back to her handlers in both the Syndicate and the Servian Collegium, it didn't mean she wouldn't. There was something intriguing about the man lurking just beneath the surface and she was determined to pry it out of him. And when she did, she'd decide what to do with it.
A noise alerted her to a visitor and the door swung open, and the curtain beyond it pulled back. Vibia propped herself up on her elbows and gave a sly, seductive smile. "Hello stranger."
