   Hilda nodded. "Fuck everyone." She agreed with a feline grin, but she listened to him all he same - watching like a hawk as he downed a gulp of his wine. Clearly this was a painful topic, and she regretted pressing him on it. "Ah I can teach you some." She chuckled, trying to lighten the mood. "Then you can swear and your employer won't know what you've said." Smirking, she sipped her own drink and then laughed - a loud, garrulous sound at his question. So direct! Maybe he'd retained some of his Germanic features after all.
   "For my brother." She explained. "He came here and I needed to get away from my shit of a husband...or his people at least, fucker bought it." She smirked and shrugged. "So I came here to see what he'd made of himself and well...lay low I guess." She tilted her head to study him. "Why? What do you think I was doing? What did you think when you first saw me walk in?"

   Sister and Brother

   Hilda narrowed her eyes as she listened. His wife...was his slave? Right. She huffed. "She didn't like me, that much was obvious." She commiserated and then cast a glance sideways at her brother. "But then...she seemed very much under his thumb. She's young enough to be his daughter, right?" She scoffed, shaking her head. "And she said she would meet me, to talk but she never came." She frowned, "Which means she either got cold feet or...she couldn't because your father was watching. Have you spoken to her at all? Since she turned on you?" She asked. Hilda rarely, very rarely, gave people the benefit of the doubt but if she was ever to do it it was for a woman who might well be locked in an unhappy marriage as she had once been.
   Nodding at her brothers instruction she mentally added, 'duh, I'm not an idiot' but chose not  to say it aloud...she was already on thin ice with Wulfric and didn't particularly wish to test his patience again, not after their argument. Instead, she hummed in contemplative silence for a moment. "They're so young. The rulers here. This Tiberius can't be any older than me." She shook her head, frowning. "Do you ever wonder what it would be like to take over the Chatti now? As young as you are?"

   Hilda's brows rose in surprise as he said he went back but wasn't welcome. She could picture it, clearly, that sort of reaction. She was likely to subject somebody  to that sort of reaction herself. She despised the trading that took place between her in-laws and the forts nearby. She hated their customs, and their language, and their dress and the way they looked down on her - as if she was stupid or dumb, purely because of her accent and her dress. She suspected that had Alexius come back to his people - dressed as he was - with his Latin - they would have been...frosty to say the least. 
   She sighed and rested a hand on his forearm as he drained the cup. "Fuck them, then." She nodded and pulled back. "Though I am not buying you another drink." She smirked, trying to lighten the mood. "Do you still speak any Germanic?" She asked, curious. If he was taken when he was a young lad then maybe he'd forgotten it. It was a sad thing to picture - a boy so stripped of culture. But then again, that was exactly what the Romans wanted. Bastards.

   He knew the Chatti. Interesting. And as he continued to speak she felt a wrench in her chest. He had a whole life snatched from him. Sure he might be free now but how many years did he have in bondage in the interim? Her jaw ground down as she thought about it, the muscles in her neck tensing. Another tribe. Unlikely to be the Tencteri  the tribe she had married into - but it could well have been. It could have equally been her own people, the Chatti could have sold him if he was from other tribe. Scum. 
   She reached out a hand across the bar, her eyes hard and her nostrils flaring. She was furious, but obviously not at him. "I am sorry, Alexius." She meant it. She would do anything within her power to ensure her people - her grandfather's people - never came under the shackles of slavery. And if the Romans got close, she knew she had the mettle to take her own life before such a situation could arise for her. A child, however, would have no such instinct. She gripped his forearm, her eyes flashing. "Do you never feel you wish to go back? Take revenge on the people that have wronged you?"

   September 18

   "Too little and too much of this shit at the same time." She wrinkled her nose, sniffing her wine. She'd never get used to it, or understand why people chose to drink it when there was the drinks of her homeland on offer. Strange people. Who seemed permanently drunk...she knew they watered their wine, but they lacked the clear steams of her home and the idea of drinking water by itself. She always got funny looks when she asked for it, and she remembered the illness she suffered when she drank the water from that cheap tavern down by the Tiber. 
   But she was soon distracted. Her brows rose and her lips parted. Germania. Home. A slave. The look of surprise was swiftly replaced by one of fury. "You were born free? And yet they took you?" She spat, glaring around the bar. Bastards. "Hilda." She managed to force out through her anger. "From the Chatti. You know it? How old were you when you came here?" She asked him, an urgency in her voice.

   Sister and Brother

   She watched her brother with a sad sigh falling from her lips. He seemed so...she didn't know what the word was. Not himself, certainly. Sad...angry maybe. She reached out a hand to squeeze his shoulder. "Well...I'm here now. If you need me." she offered and watched him carefully. "And...betrayal always comes at a cost. You know that. Might not be immediate but there'll get their comeuppance. You thinking of anybody in particular?" Besides his father, obviously, who was a class-A prick. But they'd already established that. 
   They walked and she nodded at his question. "Had his people on the streets looking for a sign of you, it's how I found you." otherwise finding him in the city would have been a needle in a haystack. Things were already a bit tenuous with her brother - even after just an afternoon - but she couldn't suppress her huff and a roll of her eyes. "I know, I know I'm not a moron. I will use him as long as we need him but I won't give him anything that crosses a line." She watched him and...for once in her life, tried to be the better person. Wulfric seemed like he could use cheering up. "But I'll listen to you on it brother. I welcome your advice."

   "A gladiator." She gave a surprised, amused and impressed look all in one - pulling her brows up and nodding. "You must have been good, to still live. Or were you so terrible that you're infamous." Smirking she sipped the stolen drink, narrowing her eyes as she glanced around the bar. The men behind them were still muttering. "Ah you're famous in here too...so you spend your nights waiting here, without a drink, saving damsels like me?" She gave him an assessing look before smiling and gesturing to the barmaid. 
   "I insist. In gratitude." Hilda didn't owe anybody anything. Every debt - even one like this - she settled. "Get the man what he wants." She waved to the woman and then laughed. "I'm from Germania." She replied, "But you don't look like you're from Rome." She assessed him again. Tall. Features that were vaguely familiar. "But you sound as if you are." Granted, his accent was more uncouth than the Patrician's that lived in Tiberius' villa.

   She smirked and sipped the drink. It was grim. Why Romans liked their wine as watered as piss she didn't know. "You didn't upset me." She replied with a chuckle, "And Alexius." She narrowed her eyes and then glanced back over her shoulder at the men who were muttering and glaring, "Why do they know your name?" 
   He was impressive to look at, she'd give him that, but if he was famous why was he drinking here? Or...not drinking here, given his cup was very much empty. She pointed at it. "Are you angling for me to buy you a drink?" She arched a brow, grinning.

   Fury flashed hot in Hilda's eyes and she smirked, ready to retort but another voice came in before she could. She frowned and glanced over her shoulder to see...well...a giant, in Rome anyway, perched on a stool smiling at her. She returned it with a smirk of her own. The man who had insulted her stuttered - evidently flustered at not just dealing with a lone woman, but now a man as well. A man he clearly knew, or knew of at least: "I...I meant no offence to your friend, Lexus." She frowned. Curious name.
   The man sat down again. Not good enough. "So you respect this man, but you do not respect me?" She demanded and the men quietly shifted in their seats, looking between themselves. The man who had insulted her cleared his throat. "You are dressed like a barbarian." She smirked and leant closer. "That is because I am a barbarian. And I want a drink." And with that, she took his, snatching it from his table to go and sit at the bar next to the man that intervened. The other man blinked, at a loss over what to do. She smirked and sipped it. "I did not ask you to intervene." She told Alexius.

    Hilda needed an escape. She loved her brother dearly but between him and the slaves of the villa she felt like she couldn't breathe. The latter were always nagging her - or she read it as such - can I get you anything domina? Would you like me to pin your hair domina? Would you like me to fetch a chiton for you domina? It was infuriating, and after the most recent episode - where the girl had tried to bundle Hilda's clothes away and offered her a Roman dress instead - she'd stormed out without much farewell to her brother or host, in search of other entertainments. 
    She'd been in this tavern before - she'd been shown it on the walk to Melissa's and the bar staff were friendly and those that frequented it generally not too unruly. Not that she would have minded the latter, she was sure she could handle herself. And she was proved right as she walked in to points and laughs in her direction. She arched a brow at the men, who clearly didn't think they'd been overheard...or that she spoke Latin. She took a step forward with a feline grin and placed a hand in the curve between her waist and her hip. She leant down so her long blonde hair fell onto the table. "May I help you, gentlemen?" She arched a brow. They blinked and then one of them chuckled; "You speak good Latin for a-" Hilda's eyes narrowed, "Careful how you finish that sentence." The men bristled, one of them standing up to face her.

   Mid-April 77AD
   Not much had changed since his conversation with Ovinia in March. Or, some things had changed, but not everything. Calpurnia was still unreachable to him. And while they would so far have to live with chance meetings, at least they had that. And he tried his hardest to go on during the days, aware that things were as they were and he couldn't do much. In that regard, he wasn't very Roman at all. Most Romans he knew, they would stop for nothing if there was something they wanted. But really, what could he do? A simple brute of a freedman with a rudis in his belt, who worked as a guard at a warehouse and often also as a private bodyguard? There was nothing. He might have a history of being famous, and people in Rome knew him, but that didn't mean he could just openly court a former Vestal and get away with it. 
   And it wasn't like he had lived in celibacy since he met Calpurnia. Or since he slept with her. How was he supposed to do that? He wasn't married to her and she was probably going to marry someone else too. It was the same issue as with Oriana and that had not worked out in the long run. Who knew if it would this time? No matter what he felt. But he didn't sleep around as much as he used to. Because it just wasn't the same anymore. It usually happened when he got very drunk, yet not so drunk that he'd pass out on the steps to the Temple of Vesta again. But drunk enough to seek comfort and distraction in someone's arms. Not that he sought it out. But it happened. 
   After all, who knew how the night would end, when you were nothing but a playing-piece in a game played by the gods above? Alexius had left work for the day, he'd been at the baths and he'd shared a meal with Lexus and then they parted ways for the night. Out he went on his usual tour, looking for a place to drink and hopefully something to look at. He walked by Melissa's thermopolia, but she appeared very busy, so he moved on and soon enough found himself in a tavern. A barmaid soon placed a cup of wine in front of him, "Getting drunk again are we?" She said, "At least you're not too far from home." She added with a grin and Alexius nodded with a smile to her, "Yes to both." He said and downed the wine. Looking over the edge of his cup as a blonde woman entered, wearing strangely foreign yet familiar clothes. He knew where he'd seen such a style of dress before. On his journey to Germania.
   Some men by the table next to him pointed at her too and he heard them whisper and chuckle and he gave them a glare, wondering if he should tell them to share their fun story out loud or if they didn't dare. A brawl might be a nice change. Although then he might not be welcome here for a while at least. Decisions, decisions...

   Sister and Brother

   April 77AD
   “You know you’ll be sorely missed Wulfric.” Said one of his co-workers at the market, as they helped each other load a cart with sacks of grains, “You’re nicer than any of the other overseers.” The man said with a grin and Wulfric smiled, “Thank you. Maybe I will miss you also.” The work had been different from what he was used to, but he hadn’t hated it. In fact, working like this felt rather good. And earning coin felt good too. They were his coins. Not given to him because of his rank or because people wanted him to do favors for them, but simply because he was good at what he did and he did the right things.
    They finished loading the cart and his co-worker picked it up at the front, “I will come tomorrow.” Wulfric promised and the other waved, before he pulled the cart himself into the warehouse. Wulfric’s shift was finished for the day and he went to find the overseer to tell he was leaving and would be back tomorrow. He still had to settle the deal he’d had with the landlord of the building where he lived, and there were other loose strings he needed to tie too. Like writing that letter to his father, as Varinia had suggested.
    He needed to figure out what to say in the letter though. Wulfric usually didn’t write letters, after all, so how to even begin? He was going over it in his mind as he left the warehouse and walked straight into a woman on her way in. They both stumbled and he looked up first, “Apologies.” He said quickly, not one wishing to stir trouble. He looked at her, about to ask if she was alright, when he noticed her familiar features… “Hilda?”

   Demanding an Audience

   April, 77AD
   Hilda tilted her head to the side, squinting up into the sun and the hill in front of her. She'd been told this was where their chief rested his head. Why the chief needed such an ostentatious home was beyond her. She'd been in Rome a handful of days and yet she had been surprised almost every hour. She'd still not found Wulfric, as it turned out 'the subura' was a very vast place with too many people in it to count. She'd countenanced going back to Varus and demanding his specific address, but she'd scrapped the idea. Even the vaguely helpful instructions of 'he works at this warehouse' hadn't led her to her brother, and so she did what she knew - she walked to the most important part of the settlement (city) and decided to seek help there. 
   She was under no illusions that their chief, their Emperor, would know where Wulfric was but she did have a thought that perhaps he'd loan her assistance to find him. She was the granddaughter of the chief of the Chatti. She was a princess, in almost all respects, and she was to be respected. Smoothing down her long-sleeved shift and the sleeveless dress that lay on-top and then adjusting her belt and the gleaming broach at her shoulder she huffed in annoyance. People were avoiding her eyes and she tried to will her features into something friendlier. It didn't seem to work as people continued to scurry past her; men in pristine white drapery, women with their heads covered and hair twirled up, and small people in shabby looking clothes rushing with their arms laden. Nobody wanted to help. She huffed again and placed her hands on her hips. 
   "How do I see the Emperor?" She called out, to nobody in particular.

   Where to Begin?

   April, 77AD
   Hilda stood in the Forum, trying desperately not to look as gormless and impressed as her man Gerfrid did as the pair of them took in their surroundings. Weeks on the road had brought them to this place and yet she was...underwhelmed. The weather was already too warm and it was only early Spring, the crowds were vile, the people rude and in her estimation the only thing Rome really had going for it was its size and the buildings. She'd never seen anything quite like it before, even on the Limes when her husbands people used to trade with the forts that dotted the area. This was something else entirely. 
   "Where should we start?" Gerfrid asked uneasily, eyeing Hilda. He had been a family friend for years, a cousin of some description, but the weeks on the road and dominance of the city had made the usually proud, powerful man a little...nervous, it seemed. It had no such effect on Hilda who glared around the bustling square. "Mother said his name was Varus, the man Wulfric was to meet." She replied in their language, ignoring the curious looks the pair of them were receiving. She placed both hands on her hips, hiking the bag she wore further up her shoulder as she did. "So we find Varus first, and then we find Wulfric. Go and ask around." She gestured with her head to a group of important-enough looking men congregating at one end of the Forum. "I'll start there." She didn't leave room for negotiation as she made a beeline for one of the illicit market stalls set up around the periphery which seemed to sell some sort of pastry. Who knew, maybe they traded in information as well as delicious looking food?

   Unexpected Arrival

   April, 77AD
   Hilda peered curiously at the door, eyes narrowed, hands on her hips and Gerfrid - the man that had accompanied her on the journey - standing nervously by her side. It didn't look like much to her - a door in a wall, but one of the men they'd spoken to had assured the pair that this was indeed where Varus lived. Whatever a Varus was (besides a fool who doomed some legions long ago). Well...she knew exactly who Varus was. Her mother had kept it from them for years, but it explained why she looked very little like her supposed brother. Half-brother. Gerfrid didn't know and she could tell his curiosity was piqued about why Wulfric would have come all the way to Rome to meet an important Roman citizen. The cover story she'd spun was weak at best, thready and full of holes and so to save any further questioning, she knocked firmly on the door.
   She flinched as a slot slid open to reveal the beady eyes of somebody looking her over. "Yes?" 
   She cleared her throat. The benefit of marrying into a tribe so close to the Romans was that she'd learned Latin (out of necessity, mostly, to overhear conversations between her tribe and their neighbours). She wasn't perfect at it, but could hold a conversation; "I am here to see Varus. Tertius." She arched a brow, "You can tell him Frieda sent me." The man gave her a once over and Hilda scoffed. She knew her fashions weren't the Roman style but she was unmoved. She stepped a touch closer to the door and offered the slave a smirk. "I'm not a very patient woman." The man slammed shut the peephole and Hilda scowled, knocking harder until, after a long few moments it finally swung open and the harried looking man gestured for her to come inside. She glanced fleetingly at Gerfrid and spoke in their language; "Wait here." He was under no obligation to do as she bid him, but he did so all the same, staring gormlessly after her as she stepped inside.
   Well. This was not what she was expecting. She tried not to let the wonder show on her face.

   Personality.
   Quick to temper, and known to bristle at authority, Hilda has few of the diplomatic skills possessed by her half-brother Wulfric or her mother. A proud member of the Chatti, Hilda is perturbed and confused by the opulence of Italia and Rome. She wears her heritage clearly and is proud to be a woman and princess of the Chatti. She likes to gamble and drink, and assert her authority when she can. Just as she is quick to temper, she is likewise quick to smile and laugh - especially when in the company of her siblings or friends. She has none of the qualms of Roman women about sex or relationships, especially since her marriage and has been known to take several lovers throughout her marriage. Passionate, forthright and dominating, Hilda is a force to be reckoned with.
    
   Appearance
   Hilda is the image one might conjure of a barbarian Germanian woman; thick blonde hair, blue eyes, freckled pale skin, strong features and an athletic, lean, nimble figure. She has a passing resemblance to her half-brother, but favours her mother. She dresses as befits her upbringing - in simple enough tunicas and thick furs, both of which she’s brought with her to Rome. She usually wears her hair down and unbraided and doesn’t wear jewellery or makeup beyond simple leather bracelets, given to her by a past lover. She is an attractive woman but the scowl she usually wears diminishes her looks somewhat.

   69AD (June) - Hilda becomes a woman as her bleeds begin, and her grandfather begins searching for a suitable match for a marriage.
    71AD (January) - Aged sixteen, Hilda is used to form an alliance with the neighbouring Tencteri, marrying the son of a chief - Ahren. She’s displeased with the match and the man but grudgingly goes all the same, leaving her family behind. 
   73AD (December) - Hilda learns her father has died and that her half-brother is leaving for Rome.
   71-76AD - Hilda lives with her husband and his people in their settlement. Their marriage is volatile and, at times, violent. This violence is mutual though and exacerbated during the long, dark winter months. 
   76AD (November) - Ahren and several of his men are killed during a spat with some soldiers of the legion stationed closest to Tencteri lands on the Limes. His body is displayed outside the Roman fort as a message. As part of the terms of her marriage, in the event of Ahren’s death without an heir, Hilda was to marry his brother. Hilda, sick of the Tencteri and of the opinion that Ahren's brother was no better than him, returns back to Chatti lands without permission.
   76AD (December) - Back with her family, the Tencteri won’t relent that Hilda should return to their lands. Frieda tries her best to persuade her father, and her brother to not relent. Discord reigns between the tribes and Hrodulf, Hrolf and Frieda make a plan to send Hilda to Wulfric, hoping that his (presumed) new influence in Rome and protection will be enough to help Hilda, and her absence from the region will calm down the Tencteri.
   77AD (January) - Hilda starts her long journey to Rome, accompanied by one of her uncles men, to escape the Tencteri demands and seek the protection and influence of her half-brother, who she assumes has established himself in the city.
   77AD (April) - Hilda arrives in Rome and seeks out Wulfric.
