Alexius life had not been going according to the plan lately. Not that he ever really had a plan, but lately, things had just taken a wrong turn. Not that it was all entirely bad, not that he was bored or didn’t have any lovers or anything like that, but he’d been feeling strange. He couldn't really explain it. All he could hope was that tonight might help. It was now about half a year ago, that he went to talk to Thessala, or rather, let it all out in a good spar with her, that he found out about the event. Thessala had heard rumors that the gang who ran the Domus Venus were considering to put up a day and night of entertainment. A private night, an exclusive night and it wouldn’t just be the kind of entertainment that the Venus was famous for. No, it would be all sorts of things. Including gladiatorial games. It was going to be a big event!
That was the first time he heard about it, back when Thessala told him what she'd heard. Then a month or so, he was invited to talk to them. It came out of the blue and he didn’t know what they wanted, it wasn’t like he wanted to be a bouncer at the Venus! Brothels were not really his thing, not at all, in fact. He always felt so bad for the women and men and boys and girls working there, forced to sleep with anyone instead of being able to choose, like he did. But the Venus didn’t want him to become a bouncer or a guard, no… they wanted to see him fight in an arena. And wondered if he’d fight a woman. Because they had managed to get a deal with a ludus about one of their most fierce and famous gladiatrices. With that, they gained his interest and then they also offered plenty of coin for his efforts.
Alexius always felt like he was in need of coin. Good wine wasn’t entirely cheap, after all. And to always have food and wine in the home to offer guests, well, that was not cheap either. So he agreed to the deal. He’d fight as a gladiator again. Purely for entertainment, there would be no Caesar there to say one should live and one should die. They could draw blood, of course, and one would win and another would lose, but killing was not on the menu for the evening. You couldn't continue entertaining people if you were dead, after all...
It was now a year since the most recent earthquake and apparently that was the perfect occasion to celebrate. He hadn’t really fought in an arena since he was freed, but everyone knew he’d never forgotten about it and he had even at times considered returning, for real, and not just for one night only. That’s what this was though. Now, he could barely wait. He'd worked hard and exercised to return to his former strength - and here he was. Dressed and armored as he’d been in the past, as a Murmillo… walking through the tunnel underneath the seats, the tunnel that led to the private arena. The tunnel that led to the roar of the crowd and a proper fight against a proper opponent. He couldn't help but smile.

Slipped Away (into a moment in time)

Coin purse tucked carefully away along with a cloth tote, Rutiliana had snuck out of the palace, escaping her hawk of a governess for the day. She lacked all the finery she was use to wearing, choosing something that would blend her in with the rest of the folk that would surely be roaming the streets. Her feet took her along paths that had become familiar from all of the other times she had done this, heading towards the emporium. A busy place where she could spend coin on silly things that she surely could have ordered from the kitchens or have brought to her, but there was just something about being among the people and doing as they did.
Merging into the crowd, she moved from stall to stall, quickly leaving the stalls that held no interest to her but lingered at others. She had found a pretty length of peacock blue silk, sheer and fine, that she thought would be pretty as a head veil for Claudia at one. A set of thin gold bangles for her stepmother. Cleverly carved and painted soldiers to add to Drusus' collection. But finally the lure of the food stalls overcame her and she allowed her nose to lead her to those destinations, stopping only one to pick out a peach for after whatever fried and savory delights she would buy.
Meat pies; pork, onion and garlic heavy in scent made her stomach growl in anticipation. Deep fried sweet breads with fig and honey paste stuffed in the middle. Her nose and eyes were a little big for her stomach, but alas her arms was loaded with food as she made her way over to a sitting area not far from the stalls. She realized her folly only then as she laid the food out. She had ordered too much, as much as she normally would have if she had had someone with her that day. And bringing it home would only soil the silk in her bag and get her into more trouble than she would be already.
Glancing around, her eyes landed on someone sitting near her within earshot and an idea came to her head. Reaching over she tapped them on the shoulder lightly, "Would you care to share with me? I'm afraid I ordered to much!" She said before they even turned around, her expression expectant of the person to agree to her whim.

Late August, 75 AD
Boring, boring, boring… the lessons with Aia had ended for the day and Marcus didn’t have any plans for the day. He could of course get into a litter and go visit one of his friends, or he could practice his fighting skills, but it was high summer and it was too hot to do anything. He lay on his bed, on his stomach, with Silvanus massaging his back. It felt nice, but he couldn’t do this all day. Maybe a trip to the thermae? That might be nice, to cool down. Or maybe a dip in the Tiber, far from where people lived, so the river wouldn’t be disgusting.
Or… maybe Caecina had an idea on what to do! She often did, he thought. Or else they’d just get some alone-time and kiss. He could spend a day doing that too. It had been a few months now, since their little escapade to the Poppina Via Lata and the Gardens of Sullust, where they promised they wanted each other, but also kept it a secret so far. And a secret their relationship remained all summer. Marcus would sneak kisses from her whenever he had the chance, fighting to control himself to not push for more than what she wanted. She was just so… beautiful and alluring, wasn’t she?
He pushed Silvanus away and had the slave hand him a light blue tunica to wear. Marcus walked though their home in Rome to Caecina’s chamber. The curtain at the door frame was drawn, so he stopped outside and ran a hand through his hair, which most likely fell perfectly as it always did.
“Caecina… are you in there? Can I come in?” He asked out loud and waited as patiently as he could.

To some, Titus Aspanius Lupus might seem like an overly cruel master. To Deianira, he was your run-of-the-mill brothel owner, no different than the owner of the brothel she'd been born in or the one she recently vacated. When the man had picked her up at the slave market in Rome, Deia had been at first curious to know what kind of man he was, but the establishment he ran was all she needed to know. Some of the other girls who'd been there longer wished they could work at the Domus Venus instead, because they were all sold so cheaply and Titus allowed men to do terrible things to them, as long as they paid. Deia understood where she was, but what could she do about it? All she could do was try and get by, keep her head down like at her old brothel, and perhaps someday be freed or escape somehow.
She had only been here a few weeks and was settling in, more or less. She had seen more customers than she thought was usual, but perhaps that was because she was new and men liked a new toy to play with. Tonight, she was moving around the brothel wearing a skimpy tunica that left little to the imagination. She had not been scooped up yet, so she was helping serve wine to men who were still deciding. She stopped before one such man with her amphora, pouring the wine carefully, lest any spill. "Welcome to the Elysium," she said in accented Latin, plastering a fake smile on her face. "I hope you can find what you are looking for."

Early June, 75 AD
It had been a few weeks since that day, when Marcus had a hangover and he and Caecina decided to go for a ride in the countryside near the villa there. And they ended up by that stream and a game of truth or dare turned into something else. They had not had a chance to be entirely alone since then and maybe it was for the best. At first they’d sent each other stolen glances, after the kiss, but one day turned into the next and soon they fell into the ordinary routine. Maybe it didn't mean anything after all; maybe it was just a foolish spur of the moment thing and she had already forgotten it. Marcus didn't know, he hadn't asked. But maybe today? And now they had a few days to stay in Rome with Juliana, although she was occupied with social visits much of the time. And Marcus? He had plans. He and Caecina had talked about visiting the Poppina Via Lata together and he would still show it to her.
He had asked if she wanted to go to the market with him one afternoon and she agreed. They were of course followed by each their own body slave, Marcus with Silvanus and Caecina had her Astraea with her. There was also a guard somewhere, alert and on the lookout, but Marcus paid him little attention while they both settled in each their own litter to be taken away from the domus in the city. Marcus told himself it wasn't so bad taking her here; it wasn't even evening and things usually got a little bit wilder in the evenings
Once they reached the Poppina, as he had instructed the slaves that carried the litters to take them to, he stepped out first and held a hand for Caecina to help her out. He had a kind of mischievous smile on his face as he looked at her when she stood, “So… maybe I lied a little. As you can see, this is not the marketplace. Remember the day we talked about the Poppina Via Lata?” As if she would forget; he kissed her that very same day! But here they were and they were not alone. The litters would be taken away for now and they were left with their body slaves and the guard.

Catching Up

Early May, 75 AD
Ah, time for a bath. Silvanus was with him, of course, but he might get left behind to watch the clothes… Marcus didn’t want anything stolen from his things and he knew the bath slaves could be quite good at picking stuff up. It was nice to be in the city, but it wasn’t like he never came here. He didn’t mind the travel between the villa and Rome, because he loved being in Rome, despite all the filth and dirt in the streets. At least the houses where he came were nice and he really did enjoy the baths.
Silvanus carefully helped him undress and was instructed to never take his eyes off Marcus clothes, when Marcus finally wrapped a piece of cloth around his waist and entered the actual thermae. He moved straight into the tepidarium, the hot sweating room, where he found himself a seat by a wall on a marble bench. The hot and humid air was thick in the room and he could see other men sitting here and there, but he couldn’t make out who they were.
Then a tall and darkhaired figure appeared from the mist and sat down near Marcus, on the same bench as he. He paid him little mind at first, but thought he looked familiar out of the corner of his eye. And when he turned his head, who was it… none other than Lucius Cassius Longinus? The man who brought him to Rome, although he barely remembered much from it, since he was nothing but a small child. Of course he had seen the man since then, but they didn’t spend a lot of time together. He’d know him anywhere though and now he’d seen him, it would be rude to not speak to him.
“Greetings, Senator.” Marcus said politely, as he’d learned, while brushing some of his blonde locks away from his forehead. He could be quite different with his friends but as far as he knew, Longinus was a respected Senator and if he wanted to get his own hopes up about reaching so far, he should remember his manners… even in the thermae, “What a coincidence to find you here.”

Awkward encounter

October, 74CE
Things had not progressed as fast as Aia and Decimus had hoped. After things got sorted out after the attack on the road, and everyone got chewed out by Flavia Juliana, Claudia and Cynane returned to the city (with the appropriate number of guards this time), and Decimus, once he could be moved, was taken back to the Castra so that the medici who took care of the praetorians could make sure his wound healed properly. He only got stolen moments with Aia before he left, and his absence left Aia shifting between sheer happiness and sheer worry.
Days and weeks passed. Flavia Juliana did not go to the city very often, and when she did, Aia accompanied her in the hopes of seeing Decimus, but he was not back on duty yet. She managed to leave him messages, but no encounter, in a pantry or otherwise, managed to happen.
Until today. Flavia Juliana was at the Palatine, and Aia managed to get the night off. She headed to the popina where they'd met before, leaving a message she hoped Decimus would get. She knew the owner of the popina, and hoped they'd have a room for the night. All this was long overdue.
By the time she entered the popina it was getting late in the evening. There were quite a few people inside, eating, drinking, and getting cheerfully loud. Aia covered her head with her palla as usual, trying to hide her telltale red hair as she walked to the counter. Hopefully, in a crowd like this, she would not draw anyone's attention...

Personality.
Marcus had a rough beginning to his life and the first few years, he was moved around a lot. Luckily he does not remember much of this; back then he just clung to his step-mother, Flavia Juliana, who took such good care of him. After the first years of his life, he was finally able to settle down together with his step-mother and adopted siblings. Marcus easily adapts, so he quickly became used to the life of a wealthy Senator's son, who was well-known at the palace of Caesar and friends with the boys and girls there. To this day, he still adores his step-mother and should anyone dare to threaten her reputation, they will have to answer to Marcus too. He is usually a fun-loving young man, but if he feels threatened or feels anyone he cares about are threatened, he can lose his temper.
Luckily, this has not happened a lot so far – but this young man does have two sides to him. Around Flavia Juliana, her husband and other adults, he will be a perfect and polite young man, although maybe a tad bit arrogant. When he’s not around adults however, but around friends and other young people around his own age, he is quite different. He can be quite spontaneous and acts on impulse and instinct rather than wait and consider what he's doing. Sometimes he forgets to think, if he feels something is important and must be done now. His life philosophy is so far to enjoy life while he has it, because you never know when it is going to end.
Marcus likes luxury and likes things getting done his way and he sometimes appears to think the world is there for his pleasure. At the same time, he hates it when people try to hold him back and can sometimes be quite the trouble-maker, because he wants things that are sometimes denied him. Especially the last few years have changed him a bit with regards to that, after his brother Lucius managed to lose their wealth - Marcus is not aware of all the details of this story, which is why he at the moment puts some blame on his brother. He used to look up to his brother, because his older brother always seemed to know when and why and how to do certain things. But Lucius was sent to Britannia and when he returned to Rome, he was moved on towards Greece and then Syria, so Marcus has not seen him a lot lately and isn't quite sure what to think of his older brother now.
What Marcus does know is that he wants that wealth back somehow and hopes he will get it - no matter what it takes. Marcus plans to rise high in the hierachy of Rome, wants to become a Senator and eventually more, but he needs guidance... or else things may turn badly for this playful mischief-maker.
Appearance
Marcus looks like a good mix of his deceased mother and father; he has inherited his mothers blonde hair and fair skin, while his build and face resemble his father more than his mother. He stands just about 6' tall and does work to stay fit and in shape and likes to know that he's good looking. Marcus frequently visits the thermae both to bathe, swim and exercise in general. He has a friendly face and often a playful expression on his face and in his blue-grey eyes. His clothing is of course according to his rank - he wears a tunica with a toga virilis at most times, now that he has come of age and growing to become a man. On his feet are sandals or half-shoes secured with thongs up his lower leg.

59 AD – Marcus’ biological mother dies and his father marries Lucretia Flora
60 AD – Decimus Junius Silanus divorces Flora and marries Flavia Juliana, daughter of Jullus Flavius Alexander. Flavia becomes the woman Marcus considers his mother, since he does not recall his father’s former wives. They all return to Britannia to live.
61 AD – Decimus Junius Silnaus is murdered by a treacherous slave, only to be killed later by his brother, the only 11 year old Lucius Junius Silanus. At the same time, Flavia Juliana is pregnant and there are plans for Flavia, Lucius and Marcus to travel back to Rome from Britannia through Gaul. Lucius Cassius Longinus escorts them to Rome. There is however unrest... little 3 year old Marcus does not understand much of anything though, but continues to cling to Flavia.
62AD – A lot of things happen on the way towards Africa, but Marcus just tags along and tries not to be in the way. Flavia Juliana gives birth to a stillborn male child on the boat towards Africa. Finally, they reach the safety of Pompeius Magnus and a proper funeral is held for Marcus’ father. Later the same year, Flavia Juliana returns to Rome alone.
63 AD – Marcus and Lucius travel to Rome to reunite with Flavia Juliana. Marcus, now 5 years old, could not have been happier to see his ‘mother’ again and wants to spend as much time as possible with her. He gets used to coming to the Imperial palace together with his mother and easily befriends other young boys of the palace.
66 AD – Flavia Juliana marries Quintus Caecina Tuscus, a respected general. He already has one daughter, Caecina Tusca and she is almost the same age as Marcus. She's a girl though and does not seem so fond of Flavia at first, which he naturally dislikes. With time though, he and Caecina become very good and close friends. Later the same year, Flavia Juliana gives birth to another stillborn child.
67-73 AD - Marcus stays friends with the Imperial sons and princes and begins proper education as a boy. Learning everything a proper Senator's son should know, including lessons in how to wield a sword. As a boy, this all seems to interest him. As a 13 year old, he is finally given the toga of manhood - the toga virilis, and is now supposed to act more mature. And he really did try to pay attention to his Greek tutor, but it wasn't easy. His older brother eventually finishes rebuilding their family home, the home of his father, and Marcus too wants to live with there with his brother, whom he admires, instead of with Flavia and her new family. He still visits Flavia often however, while also keeping his friendship with the Imperial heirs. Marcus is curious and hungry when it comes to life and he has the money to make it a fun life.
73 AD - Everything changed (again!) when Marcus' brother Lucius in legal troubles with distant relations lost their wealth and then burned down the original family home; the home that had just been rebuilt... and then lost to them. Marcus, slightly upset over all this and not quite understanding his brothers motives, moved in to live with Flavia Juliana and Quintus Caecina Tuscus again. It was also in 73 AD that Lucius Cassius Longinus gifted Marcus his body slave, Silvanus, who has been with him since.
75 AD - Marcus is now 17 and enjoys social events and parties, spending time at the baths and he enjoys looking at people, especially young ladies of his own age. Marcus' life philosophy at the moment is 'enjoy life while you can' and he hopes no one will try to ruin it for him. He knows he's going to grow up to become someone important and he can barely wait; once he turns 18, he will begin to follow the Honos Curum by starting with the Viginitiviri. Until then however, he also tries his hardest to enjoy life as it is right now, because he knows it can end when you least expect it.
