  1. It had been a long day. On top of giving a rough price for things for tomorrow's auction, someone had had the audacity to send their slave along to say the mistress was making a clean sweep of her new house and could they sell the old things through Annius Faventinus, who would, naturally, get a cut of the proceeds?

Paulus could not trust his staff to make the necessary negotiations and arrangements, so he had had to wend his way from the Saepta Julia to the Esquiline, skirting the Subura, praying to all the gods that they wouldn't mess up the pricings for tomorrow. Still, being an auction (and Rome!), he could correct things as he went. Crispus, at least, could be trusted not to mess things up too badly, if the others would only listen to him for once.

Half a morning spent listening to the newly married matron and he couldn't help wondering how long the marriage would last. Between her voluble chattering and the heat of the day, he had begun to develop a headache and was glad to be able to retreat down the hill and to a very handy wine-shop on the way back to the Saepta.

Not only was it handy, it was popular. He hadn't been there long before someone joined him, at the only free seat left in the place. His headache had, thankfully, begun to dissipate and he was able to reply with equanimity, "Isn't Rome always miserable in summer? Although summer does seem to be starting earlier than ever, this year."

  2. Not all of these are Roman, but they're all history or fantasy and can be made to pass much easier than some modern shots... I will add to this list when I find anything suitable. (I, Claudius has no caps online anywhere that I can discover, woes.) There are POC in Tut and a couple in Troy: Fall of a City and Spartacus.

For your convenience, sites/links added in the latest edit are starred *

300 and 300: Rise of an Empire - Not accurate but they do have some usable shots, especially for people making gladiators

Agora - Roman Egypt in the 3rd or 4th century (I don't know how many caps there are, but some is better than none!)

Atlantis - Ancient Greek, accurate and usable!

Atlantis - More complete set of screencaps

Barbarians - Romans in Germania in the first century, pretty accurate from what I've seen

Ben Hur - the 2011 remake; 1st century Judea and Rome

Britannia - 1st Century Roman Britain

Camelot - Medieval(ish) but usable for Ancient Rome with cropping

Centurion - Roman soldiers against the barbarians, no idea of the accuracy/usability of the caps

Clash of the Titans - Mythology/fantasy with usable screenshots

Domina - Based on the life of Augustus' wife Livia, some very nice usable pics

The Dovekeepers - Masada (Judea in c. 70AD)

The Eagle - 2nd Century Roman Britain - seriously freakin' huge caps, pretty accurate in setting (Word of warning: There were no women in this film)

Game of Thrones - Medieval fantasy, with some usable pics depending on cropping (You may need to login to this site, but it's the only one on my list where that's necessary)

Game of Thrones - from a different site; screencaps of the first three seasons

Game of Thrones - From a different site; I believe there are caps of all eight seasons

    Gladiator - 2nd century Rome

Gods of Egypt - Ancient Egyptian fantasy

Hammer of the Gods - Dark Ages fantasy, hopefully with some useful shots

Hispania, la leyenda - Romans in 1st century BC Spain; Spanish-language series, historically inaccurate, visually pretty good

The Hollow Crown - Medieval but usable pics

The Hollow Crown - Fuller set of caps than the above link

The Last Kingdom - Dark Ages, several usable pics

Legend of the Seeker - Medieval-esque fantasy, numerous usable pics

Pompeii - Pompeii before the eruption of 79AD, pretty damn accurate

Prince of Persia - Middle Eastern fantasy with some decently usable shots

Roar 1990s miniseries, no idea of accuracy or usability of shots! From IMDb: An Irish chieftain fights against Roman encroachment

Robin Hood - TV mini-series; Medieval fantsay. Several decent pics

Rome Season 1; Rome Season 2 - HBO's Rome (again), screencaps from a different site

Sinbad - dark ages/medieval Eastern fantasy. Several POC  playby possibilities

Spartacus - All four seasons of the HBO miniseries

Troy - 13th century BC Greece (2004 film)

Troy - Fall of a City - Ancient Greece; pretty accurate  (eight-episode miniseries)

Troy - Fall of a City - Same as above, from a different site, with some very nice screenshots

Tut -Ancient Egypt (three episode miniseries)

Vikings - the Vikings! Good for Germans and any barbarians/bearded types - five seasons' worth of caps

Vikings - again, same show, screencaps on a different site. All six seasons capped

    Screencap Websites Used:

    Cap That.com

Fancaps.net (not the most easily navigated site but does have good screencaps)

    Far Far Away Site

Kiss Them Goodbye (now on Tumblr)

    Movie Screencaps.com

    Screencapped.net

If anyone finds screencaps at any other site, please let me have links so I can add them to this list!

  3. March 74CE

Rufus had not expected to be sold - not so soon, anyway; every slave could expect to be sold at some point, after all. It was part of the condition of being a slave. He had just not expected it so soon, nor had he really expected it to be in Rome, several days' journey from home.

He really shouldn't be thinking of Paestum as 'home' any more, except that it had been all his life. Home now would be... wherever his new master (mistress?) lived. Rufus could only hope that he (or she, or they) would be decent enough to their slaves. Somewhere to sleep at night, regular mealtimes, enough food... It would be useless to dream of much more than that, of course.

At least he had the comfort of being a slave from within Italy, whose mother tongue was Latin and who therefore did not have to suffer the added indignity of being put up for sale with his feet  chalked as the imported slaves did - even if he did resemble them in colouring more than he resembled the olive-skinned, dark-haired Romans. Well, that couldn't be helped, of course.

He brushed straw from his hair and straightened as the master approached, leaning on his stick due to the limp he had.

This could be it; he could be in a new home with a new master by sunset. He stood neatly, with his hands folded in front of him, his head up but his eyes down - no free man liked a slave who looked them in the face, after all, and Rufus wanted as much favour with the master as he could, in order to have the best chance he could of going to a good owner. And of course, the master would know who the good owners were likely to be (at least, from the point of view of his earnings. Maybe not so much from the point of view of the slaves sold to them.)

He drew a breath, readying himself for what was to happen, but did not speak. After all, slaves did not initiate conversations with the free if they knew what was good for them.

Excellent, I'll get a thread up soon with Marcus for Paulus.

And yes, Octavius could. Would you like to set that one up and would you like @Sarah involved? I think it could be fun. 😄

I would love @Sarah to be involved - it could indeed be fun! If I get something wrong with tagging or anything, please let me know!

  5. Marcus would be very welcome to stop by and browse! (Paulus was a little inspired by M. Didius Falco's father, though he draws the line at running of with redheaded snippets!)

And would Octavius be interested in a new slave?

  6. It's only taken... OMG. Years. I was thinking of joining AeRo way back then and RL got in the way, so... *throws confetti all over Rome*

Marcus Falco. ...Would that be a reference to Marcus *Didius* Falco, perchance?! (I love those books!)

A chance for Rufus to enter the Imperial household? Ooohh.

  7. Rufus

    20 | 15/5/54 | Slave | House-slave/Body-slave | Bi | Original | Eddie Redmayne

    S9yBRf4.png

    Personality.

Rufus is a willing young man, wanting to please his master mainly because that leads to an easier life for him. He is generally cheerful, yet hides a slightly cynical side beneath his cheerful exterior. Despite what people may believe thanks to his hair, he does not have a quick temper. He is intelligent and possessed of more curiosity than is entirely healthy in a slave, but tries to hide it and limit the number of questions he inevitably wants to ask. He learned at a young age to say, "As it please my master" and "As my master says". He has not been in Rome very long and has seen almost nothing of it other than the slave dealer's pens, but knows that it is the greatest city on earth. He is sensible enough to realise that he will have to stick very close to whoever buys him while he learns his way around, but he has been blessed with a good sense of direction, at least.

    Appearance

Possibly a little on the short side of average at about 5' 3", Rufus has all the appearance of being British (or at least, coming from some far-off barbarian country in the north of the Empire). He has fair skin which is apt to freckle in the Italian sun. It is accompanied by grey eyes and hair of an unusual shade that is pure red rather than having the more common (yet still highly unusual) ginger shading. Rufus wears what his master gives him; his usual clothing until now being a linen tunic in some plain serviceable colour. Like most slaves, he is generally barefoot in the house, though he may be allowed sandals when running errands of one sort or another - no master wants their slave to bring in something nasty on their feet, after all, if the issue is easily remedied.

While he looks foreign, he is as Roman (as Italian, anyway) as anyone, speaking Latin like the native he is. He also fluent in the Greek dialect of rural southern Italy (which had, after all, once been a Greek colony). He has no defects that would put anyone off wanting to buy him, he is healthy and strong, clear-eyed and with good teeth - all the things he knows a potential master will be looking for.

    Family

Father: Unknown (probably his first master, Gaius Tullius Messala, but it's never actually been confirmed)

    Mother: Phoebe

Siblings: One older sister, Bretta (age 22) who was sold away about five years ago

    Spouse: Unmarried

    Children: None known

    Extended family: Unknown

    Other:

    History

Rufus is - or was - verna, a slave born in his master's house. Born to one of the maids, the baby's obvious red hair led to the master inevitably naming him Rufus ('Ginger'), and the hair has not lost any of its redness in the years since.

He grew up learning all the sorts of things a slave generally learns - how to keep the house clean and tidy, how to serve at dinner in a way that won't draw attention to you and upset your master, what errands really need to be run fast and which will let you dawdle on the way back. Rufus grew up in Paestum, in Campania, near the sea, where his first master's family lived. It wasn't a bad life, even for a slave, all things considered. The area had been a Greek colony, part of Magna Graecia (Hellas Magara) and Greek is still spoken in some areas, so Rufus (being a quick-minded sort, and young) easily picked up the local dialect during errands to the market, as well as the Latin that was spoken at home. It might not be on the same level as the Greek spoken in Athens, but he could get by, if he needed to.

His master, being a kindly sort (and suspected by everyone to have fathered Rufus), spent time teaching him to read and write. It might have been only for a few minutes a day, but with Rufus' natural intelligence, coupled with his knowledge that he was being offered a rare thing for a slave, plus the advantages that Latin is a very easy and logical language, a few minutes a day was all that was required. It isn't a skill that he has really used much, but in his current position, it can only add to his value - and it remains to be seen whether that is a good thing or not. While he can speak Greek (or a dialect of it), he was not taught to read and write in it.

Change was on the way, however, and not necessarily for the good: His mother died when Rufus was fifteen (in 69CE). Losing his one sole actual relation sent him into a depressive phase where while his service was outwardly as good as ever, his spirit had vanished. It took time but his natural buoyancy eventually reasserted itself, slowly but surely. Life moves on and at least his mother was free, now, as she had not been while she was alive.

His master has recently died and his son, the new master, is away from home. This chance (and some similarity in Rufus' appearance compared to his late master) has led to his mistress selling Rufus to a slave trader who will sell him to a new master, preferably (at least for his mistress) someone who does not live anywhere near Paestum. All Rufus can hope for is that his new owner, whoever it is, will be a master who treats his slaves well and does not resort to punishment too often, or for perceived (rather than real) mistakes. He hopes, so far as he can allow himself to hope, to become a house-slave somewhere, or perhaps even a body-slave.

  8. Hi! That sounds good! I'm also creating a second character who might be one of Spurius' wares - I noticed you included a description in one post that fit Rufus almost perfectly!!

    Attis

Body-slave to Lucius Cassius Longinus, Attis is famed for his snark and quick tongue, which have been known to get him in trouble. He makes friends quite readily although he doesn't get emotionally close with anyone very easily, using his wit and humour to deflect anything emotional. He has quite a wide circle of acquaintances among his master's friends' slaves and the neighbours' slaves. He is a man of limited ambition, mostly daydreams of when he might eventually attain his freedom.

    Looking for:

    • Friends and acquaintances
    • People who aren't unarmed in the battle of wits

    arma virumque canō...

    QYk7bBs.jpg

    Aulus Calpurnius Praetextatus

The recent governor of Raetia, in Gallia, Aulus is older brother to Vestal Virgin Calpurnia Praetextata, although they haven't seen each other in years (perhaps briefly during Aulus' last visit to Rome, but that was back in 69 while he was praetor. He has close links with Quintus Augustus and his family, having supported Quintus' claim as Emperor, and he is in the running for Consul next year. He is a successful military man, having been in involved in Quintus' campaigns on the Rhine and in Britannia. He's quite sociable and very loyal to those who prove themselves worth his loyalty.

    Looking for:

    • Friends and fellow Senators
    • People needing a patron
    • Any other feasible connection

    hic labor, hoc opus est

    hC1k2LM.jpg

    Davus

Slave and general errand boy/house slave in the household of Titus Sulpicius Rufus, Davus hails originally from Alexandria, via Corinth. He is able to get out and about while shopping and running other household errands. He may also be present to wait upon guests to the house.

    Looking for:

    • Friends, in Titus' household and belonging to other houses in the neighbourhood
    • Links with acquaintance of his master's, and perhaps their slaves
    • Wouldn't be averse to a love interest

    medio tutissimus ibis

    ArDtDG.png

    Gaius Vipsanius Roscius

Senator, elder brother of Lucius Manius Victorius Roscianus (who was recently adopted into an equite family), Gaius has served in the military under the command of Lucius Cassius Longinus. He has returned to Rome to further his political career.

    Looking for:

    • Friends, acquaintances and clients (both new and old)
    • Any other connections

    Jason

The body-slave of Tiberius Claudius Sabucius, Jason is Sarmatian from the vast steppes beyond Rome's Panonnian border. His master has recently taken up residence in the villa attached to the Gardens of Sallust, and he is able to get out and about. Through his cousin Azarion, he has become involved in the hunt for the person (or persons) responsible for several attacks on women and others.

    Looking for:

    • Friends, both within Tiberius' household and outside it.
    • Possibly a love interest
    • Links with friends and acquaintances of his master

    • Possibly a new wife
    • Members of the White faction - the wanted thread is here

    īnstrūmentum vōcale

    2U9c4ni.jpg

    Rufus

Bought by Octavius Flavius Alexander, Rufus is now serving his master as a body slave. He will probably be a background item serving drinks to anyone visiting Octavius, or otherwise waiting on his master, but outside of his duties, he needs:

    • Friends (perhaps fellow slaves in neighbouring households)
    • Links with acquaintances of his new master's (and perhaps their slaves)
    • Other interesting people he could run into when performing errands

    labor omnia vincit

    Teutus

is a freedman, the (illegitimate) son of Tertius Quinctius Varus. He has recently been given his freedom, although he has been supplanted as a son by the recent birth of a child his father will declare to be free. He has expressed his need to not be around the child as he grows up into the place that Teutus had been promised, and is looking to get into trade of some description, most likely in olive oil, or wine, but also potentially other luxury goods.

    Looking for:

    • A friend or friends who won't be put off by his dysfunctional family status
    • A potential lover or lovers (either sex - one of each would be Elysium!)
    • Other connections

    semper paratis

    eIdsFLJ.jpg

    Volusa

is the personal body-slave of Claudia Caesaris. She's most likely to know and interact with other people within the Imperial household, but she's not limited to just those folks.

    Looking for:

    • a friend or friends (take a look at the other wanted folks in Claudia's retinue)
    • Other connections

  10. Paulus Annius Faventinus

    45 | 15th February 29CE | Plebeian | Auctioneer | Straight | Original | Jared Harris

    Z6Y117s.jpg

    Personality.

An auctioneer, trader, dealer in bric-a-brac, art and 'antiques' of doubtful provenance, Paulus is an easy-going man with an eye for a bargain. He trades, along with many others of his ilk, from premises in the Saepta Julia. He is friendly, but shrewd, taking no nonsense from anyone. He knows most people on the Aventine and can tell you who is best to deal with and who to steer clear from. He won't deal in ill-gotten gains nor act as a fence, but equally, he won't tell the vigiles who's been asking for such a person. He is a family man (well, with a wife and several children, it's hard to insist he's anything else!). He has a dry sense of humour, and enjoys the finer things in life - and a man in his trade can get his hands on those easily enough, even if they're not quite up to the standard the patricians surround themselves with.

He should not be mistaken for a pushover, though; among the staff he employs are two ex-gladiators, there to keep an eye on the stock and deter people from trying anything untoward.

    Appearance

Paulus is of average height but carries himself upright, a trait inherited from his late ex-legionary father which may lead to people assuming that he is taller than he actually is. He has sandy coloured hair which is thinning on top, although he has not actually developed a bald patch yet! He prefers to dress comfortably than fashionably, wearing even a pallium only when necessary and a toga only when absolutely forced into it by his wife and long-suffering body-slave. His usual expression is a serious one, but the tell-tale crows'-feet at the corners of his eyes give away his tendency towards optimism. His tendency towards comfort rather than fashion shows itself in that he prefers to grow a beard rather than submit to the regular routine and discomfort of seeing a barber  (or even of trusting his stubble to a razor wielded by his slave). He does, however, keep it neatly trimmed - he's not a barbarian! He has the fair skin which usually accompanies ginger hair, and tries to stay out of the direct sun as much as he can because of it - thankfully, Rome has numerous porticoes and colonnades to aid in this endeavour!

    Family

    Father: Lucius Annius Faventinus

    Mother: Junilla Salvia

Siblings: (surviving) Annia Rufilla  (age 40), Annia Faventina (age 37), Septimus Annius Faventinus (age 35)

    Spouse: Vipsania Petra

Children: Lucius (16), Annia Salvia (14), Annia Flavia  (10)

Extended family: Uncle: Aulus Junius Salvius (d. 60CE) (a member of the plebeian branch of the Junii)

    Other: Numerous nieces and nephews

    History

Born to a legionary and his, ahem, faithful camp follower, Paulus' first memories are of living in the vicus outside a Roman fort somewhere in the wilds of, probably Gaul. His father decided on the unusual praenomen of 'Paulus' (little, small) because he was a small baby and not expected to survive, though with care and his mother's determination not lose her first child - and a boy! - he pulled through the first winter, growing rapidly and putting the lie to the meaning of the name.

It was an easy enough childhood, interspersed with watching the soldiers drilling and training. His two younger sisters and younger brother were born at various intervals and various camps as his father's legion moved around. He was taught to read at an informal school set up by an enterprising Greek freedman, easily learning his letters and memorising whatever work was set.

In 41CE, his father's legion is involved in the Germania conflict and his father is killed in a skirmish, leading his mother to struggle back to Rome where her family live with four children in tow. At twelve years old, the change in circumstances and the journey made an impression on Paulus and even as he tried to ease the burden on his mother by assuming the mantle of the paterfamilias of the small group, he knew that he did not want to follow in his father's footsteps, even for the glory of Rome and the sake of following the Eagles - not even for the splendid armour and the red cloak that the legionaries wore.

Returning to the bosom of his mother's family, people he had never met, was another discomfiting milestone in Paulus' life, eased by the fact that his uncle, his mother's sister, had no children of his own and took Paulus under his wing in teaching him the ins and outs of his small business in dealing in 'antiques' (better described as bric-a-brac). Paulus developed an eye for a good piece and a sense for how much the punters would pay for it.

Paulus assumed the toga virilis in 44CE, marking his official entry into the ranks of adult male citizens. Nothing really changed, except that he was now able to close deal himself, which led his uncle to taking more of a backseat in running the business.  When news reached him that his paterfamilias had died, he merely shrugged and assumed that mantle as well - he followed the prescribed period of mourning for the man, despite not mourning in the least a man he had never met.

He did all the things a paterfamilias was supposed to do, although his sisters did not require his help in finding husbands, and barely required his services at their weddings. He found a wife of his own, the daughter and only child of a man involved in a similar trade and naturally the marriage meant bringing the two businesses together, with Paulus moving his uncle's former business into the premises in the Saepta Julia that his father-in-law had been using.

His son has now reached his own majority and is eager to join the Legions. His father is cautious, knowing what he does about that life, but he knows full well that if he forbids it (as is his right), then Lucius is headstrong enough to circumvent him somehow and join anyway. Salvia is nearing marriageable age, and Flavia is ten, and without a care in the world, announcing one day that she wants to be a Vestal Virgin and the next that she wants to join the Legions with Lucius. His wife is growing accustomed to the life of a businessman's wife, especially one who has raised her standard of living enough that the family now has their own house rather than living in the cramped quarters of an insula somewhere.

  11. Yes, it's me! I've still kept up with RPing that era, but the overall interest in the Napoleonic Wars (StC's setting) waned till it was just a couple of us and, well. It was a shame, but the board did manage to last for quite a while! I'm just really glad that AeRo and other boards from that time in our lives are still going strong.

I may bring one of my StC characters over here, actually. Just, revised for the setting and everything. 😄

  12. I've known about AeRo for years - I ran Show the Colours (since defunct, woe!!) and AeRo was one of the very first affiliates StC had. Also, I hung out on RPG-D back in the day, so we've 'met' before. Just... a long while ago! 😄

Thanks; I'm looking forward to it. Just trying to work out a character, though I've got a few ideas.

  13. Hello! 👋

I'm Sharpie, I'm new here. I live in the UK, studied Classics at university (though mostly focussing on the fall of the Republic) but have kept an on-again, off-again interest in all things Roman. I've been RPing since about 2006, but this is the earliest in time I've ventured. Looking forward to getting to know you and RP with you all.
