  1. Wulfric definitely had other blood running through him than just Roman blood – he had proud blood from the North and he wasn’t some nobody either. On the other hand, he did enjoy trying to solve problems with words rather than swords, although he would if he had to, of course. Sometimes some people just could not be talked to. That was not the case with sweet Aglaea though, who seemed happy to see him and told him that she was well. Wulfric nodded and then she stated that she was hot, chuckling and wanting to go into the shade. “Of course, if you want. I need shade also, I think. Or else sun will burn me.” Wulfric said to her and followed her to the benches nearby. He waited for her to take a seat and then sat next to her, glad to get out of the sun and with someone likable too. He paid her attention when she spoke again, she thanked him for coming once more and hoped he was well too. “I am well, thank you…” Wulfric said, “You should teach me to say your name right. I feel I say wrong. I need learn how to say words right. I do not wish to… offend?” He wanted to be her friend and he felt she deserved that he spoke her name right. And that he treated her right. And you didn’t treat someone right by not saying their name right, when you had the opportunity to do so. If you could be more hospitable towards someone kind, you should be. That's how he was raised. @Echo
  2. He felt bad for Teutus, it sounded like he’d gone through Hades in his life and it apparently didn’t end today. Maybe it would continue for him… so Alexius could definitely understand the drinking, but at the same time he was also glad he chose to take Teutus under his wing today, so at least the younger man would be safe while drunk. Alexius shared his story, or part of it, since Teutus asked and Teutus said it sounded rough too. Then refilled Alexius’ wine. He explained he didn’t want to stay in his father’s house and he considered setting up a business. “That sounds like it could be a very good trade, Teutus. Wine and olive oil are two things that Rome will always need.” Alexius said with a smile, “At the moment, I take the jobs I can get. I work as a bodyguard or guard, mostly… I’d like a more steady job, you know, just one employer instead of changing them constantly.” He said and became thoughtful for a moment, then gave Teutus a look, “You know, if you do set up a business and need a hand with protecting the goods or something… let me know.” It might be interesting to help set up business with someone. And Teutus here sounded like someone who’d know how to do it. Alexius would be happy to help, for a price, of course. @Sharpie
  3. He had wanted her to follow a particular diet while she was pregnant, because he did not wish to endanger his child a second time – that she’d risked the child’s life and her own once, was plenty. Now both she and the boy Peregrinus were both fine and he gave her the wine she asked for. Meanwhile she maneuvered the boy on her arm so she had one arm free to drink and eat with. He noticed how she smiled when she tasted the wine and they spoke briefly about how small children were like and how they’d be trouble until they married. Charis chuckled at his comments and then he told her how glad he was that everything went well and he hoped it wouldn’t go the way it did with his wife. She voiced that she was worried too and how she’d been tired and that it hurt so much, but now she was fine and healthy, according to the midwife. Tertius smiled and then she put a hand on his shoulder and he looked at her, met her eyes for a moment there while she said she was fine. It almost felt like a timeless moment, but then it was gone… or was it? “You can’t imagine how that also pleases me to hear. I know things… have changed, between us. Now however… we have this child. Things will change again.” Tertius said, thinking he hoped it would change for the better, but he didn’t say such words out loud. It felt kind of awkward, suddenly, he felt… so he decided to change the subject, “Should I hold him a while if you want a bite to eat?” @Sara
  4. Cynane was certain she'd act differently, if she was suddenly freed and elevated in ranks. But that was unlikely to happen, unless she married someone of a higher rank and right now, she could not imagine marrying anyone at all. Not that it was in the cards anyway. On the other hand, if she was freed, would she then just submit to the laws of Rome, the unspoken rules about what you did and how you were supposed to act as a woman? It wasn't something she did right now, after all. Anyway, she was a slave. It didn't matter at all. But she knew the rules, at least. Sosia seemed surprised to hear she should not be roaming the streets at night on her own. Then she said she had not been here for long, she she wasn't used to it all here. Then Sosia had wondered what it was that Cynane did and she revealed she was a bodyguard. That made the other woman laugh, saying she didn't need a guard when she had Cynane. She couldn't help but smile then, as something crossed her mind, "Tonight I needed one though, it seems. Maybe if we stick together, we won't need anyone else..." She suggested, but it was just a strange and fleeting thought and the moment she said it out loud, she realized how stupid it sounded. Why would Sosia stick together with a slave? Besides, she had a husband. Sosia went on about how she had never met a female bodyguard and wondered how Cynane ended up there. Well that definitely stopped her foolish thoughts about her and Sosia... "I'm a slave... I didn't have much choice. When I first came here, I was a gladiatrix for many years. Then I was hand-picked to become a bodyguard at the palace. It's better than the arena though, at least." Much better, at the palace she wasn't prostituted while also having to fight and entertain in the daytime. At the palace, she was more free. And she guarded the kindest of them all, that was her opinion anyway. @Sara
  5. Poor Teutus, life sure had dealt him the wrong hand. Maybe he needed to do like Alexius and put his life in the hands of Fortuna. You were there anyway, so you better just submit to the powerful and lovely lady anyway. And let her guide you instead of pull you down. Alexius had done that and it worked for him. He felt sorry for Teutus though, who thought life had been very unfair to him. Life wasn't always what you expected. And still, you had to do something with the path you'd been dealt. Alexius tried his best to enjoy it, no matter what. He tried to explain to Teutus that he, as a freedman, also got a different life than what he imagined as a slave, but he tried to get the best out of it anyway. He hadn't meant to share his life story, in fact he felt he was quite good for leaving out so many details for once. But then Teutus asked what he had hoped for. "I had hoped to return to the lands where I was born. And I did, actually. Germania." Alexius added, just so Teutus knew what it meant, "That's where the real trouble began... here in Rome, I'm just a freedman, a former slave born in a foreign land. In Germania, I'm too much of a Roman to be welcomed into their lands. And I couldn't find anyone who might have known me or my family. I wasn't one of them anymore. So I came back to Rome." He explained. He had moved on though. He had jobs and he had his lovers and his son. And he had wine... Alexius tasted his, then looked at Teutus again, "Do you have any plans for you life now then... that it didn't turn out as you'd hoped?" @Sharpie
  6. Alexius would not force sad Teutus here to share his story, if he didn’t want to, but he kind of had the feeling that Teutus did want to talk about it. He just had no one to talk to… well until now. And Alexius could be many things. He liked to make others feel comfortable in his presence. So if it was someone listening to your story you wanted, that’s what he would be. Teutus chose to share his story then, after a good gulp of wine. Alexius had no idea Teutus was talking about a slave girl he knew, but he knew it sounded a bit depressing to Teutus. If not a lot. “Life isn’t always fair, is it?” Alexius said with a sigh to Teutus, ignoring the younger man’s suggestion about finding someone else. Alexius did not give up so easily and besides, he didn’t think it would be healthy for Teutus to drink so much alone. He could get in trouble. Besides, Teutus was not bothering him at all. Alexius approached the other, after all. “And free life isn’t always what you imagine it would be, either. I know about that, I’m a freedman too. All my years as a slave… I longed for freedom. And when I finally gained it, it did not turn out the way I had hoped. Not that I want to be a slave again, but… anyway… I try to get the best out of it. There’s little else to do, right?” He didn’t know if such words would cheer up Teutus, but maybe it would be a comfort to know he wasn’t entirely alone. @Sharpie
  7. Didia was sweet for laughing at his jokes and comments, but she also seemed to agree with the excuse he’d have ready, if anyone were to ask what they were doing. He chuckled at her words though, “I don’t know if the other times counts as only excuses… but yeah…” He replied and then he had told her about men also needing to be saved sometimes. Not all men could fight. She seemed surprised to hear it and believed that if she was larger she could have fought him off. “It would depend on your skills, no matter your size. It’s not always strength either, actually. It’s skill.” Alexius lectured her, “Which is why we’re here.” He added with a smile and they left the path to find a private spot. Didia seemed to like an open space that was otherwise deserted and Alexius looked around and nodded. It was still only dusk, but that also meant there was enough light to go by, at the moment. “It looks fine.” Alexius agreed, “So… what is it you have to defend yourself with?” @Sara
  8. Maybe he was becoming a bit sentimental or soft, but he didn't know. When you'd lived a life like he had and it often took you by surprise, taking you somewhere new... and you eventually just learned to live with whatever you had, was it so strange to want to dwell by memories sometimes? That's what he came here to do. He did like watching the gladiators of course, some were good and most were handsome men (and women), but that wasn't the entire reason why he came. Now he'd show Felix the seats where you could watch the gladiators train for free and he showed Felix the doorway to the staircase that led from the street to the seats further up on the building, where you could see the training grounds from above. A few of the other spectators gave Felix and Alexius a glance, but nothing more and Alexius took a seat. Meanwhile Felix wondered about the supporters and who came here and Alexius smiled, looking around. "I have seen women here before, so I suppose so." He said with a grin, "And yes, definitely dedicated supporters, if you'd call them that. I don't really have a favorite, I think. Or, I do, but it may be loaded because I know them personally." Alexius winked at his handsome friend, "Right now though, that's not my focus for the day." Felix was what he would focus on instead, "What do you think... about one of my favorite places in Rome?" @Chevi
  9. Was she maybe not dead after all? She could feel Thessala’s warmth, the softness of her lips, she could even taste her. And not just her, to be honest. The blood from the battle had also come on Thessala’s lips, making her even more attractive to Rana. So she was definitely still dead. Or not. She was in between, wasn’t she? A spirit, like Thessala said… When the kiss broke, they looked at each other and then Rana had to know what that kiss meant… what it was for. She had a feeling, but she wasn’t sure and she had to hear it said. For some reason, she had to hear it said. And Thessala sighed by her question. Rana wanted nothing more but to comfort her, but how could she? Then Thessala spoke. She whispered it, but it sounded so loud to Rana. Rana blinked, but then she smiled. Unable to shed any tears in her odd state of being, she had to do what she could do. It made her feel happy inside. Like something had been released. Thessala apologized but Rana shook her head, there was nothing to apologize for! And she wondered if Rana’s people had a place they went, when they died. “There are places for the dead. Among the gods. Or in the underworld.” But it was only people who died fighting, who went to the gods. And Rana, she hadn’t gone anywhere at all. Instead she was here and now she finally knew why. Thessala’s words made her feel so good. And they could only do that, because what Thessala said was what Rana felt. “It doesn’t matter. Nothing matters. Only that… Thessala… I also… love you.” @Chevi
  10. Wulfric gave a surprised look, when Iophon more or less chocked on his drink. Why though? In Germania, Wulfric was considered a kind of prince, sure, and he protected the king, sure... but he was still also a man of the people and in Germania, they were not quite as elevated above the rest as here in Rome. He bet the Roman Emperor would never go out on his own and just talk to common people. It was different where Wulfric came from. In Germania, you were in control, but you couldn't be too elevated and reserved. Then you wouldn't be liked. And that was very important too. People had to believe you had the strength of body and mind to rule, but also skills to converse and solve problems with ordinary people. Iophon called him a strange word that he wasn't sure he knew. "Praetorian?" He asked and then he'd also explained that he might be king someday. Now it was too much for Iophon though and Wulfric grinned at his reaction. "I not king yet. Maybe I never be. You can not live life on maybe." Wulfric said then, "I am here, now. This matters. Treat me like normal person." @Chevi
  11. Wulfric could only hope that he had found the right fountain – and that Aglaea would show up. He hoped that her unkind master, his own uncle, wouldn’t keep her locked up, although with what she told so far about him, Wulfric kind of feared what the man would do. But hopefully she would show up. He wanted to befriend her, she was sweet and kind and pretty and she clearly needed someone like Wulfric in her life. He was far too compassionate to just forget about her and her story. Maybe it was the wrong fountain? The sun had moved a bit while he sat here and he felt he ought to find shade, or his skin might burn. It had happened a few times before, he wasn’t so used to the constant warmth and sunshine here in Rome. Or, his body wasn’t. He had been here a few months now and he was slowly getting used to the place and its people. And there was one of them! He smiled when she suddenly appeared and approached him. She was smiling softly too and he stood from where he’d leaned to the fountain and greeted her with a nod of his head. “Of course I come, Ag-laea. I am glad seeing you too.” He said, “How are you? Well, I hope.” @Echo
  12. It was shortlived, the smile, but Alexius saw it. And that pleased him, that he'd managed to make this otherwise moody and gloomy young man smile. So there was still hope. And Alexius definitely did not mind meeting new people and making new friends, no matter who they were or what they came from. Your background didn't matter that much to Alexius - it was more how you acted and how you behaved, that mattered. And often also how you looked, of course. Teutus, as the younger man said his name was, definitely didn't look too bad at all. A bit on the slim side, but that didn't make him unattractive. People were different. Alexius didn't mind that. Again, it wasn't what mattered the most in the long run. "Teutus, nice to meet you, no matter your mood." Alexius said as they sat down near the door - Alexius with his bowl of stew and his mug of wine and Teutus with his cup and his jug. Teutus then again didn't seem to know why Alexius wanted his company. "Well... maybe you're not cheerful, but you're still company. And I did see you smile just before, so the battle is not over yet." Alexius grinned, but then let it fade, "The day has barely begun, after all. Besides, I like meeting new people and I've not seen you around here before, I think." Alexius said and tasted his wine briefly and then looked at Teutus again, "Why are you getting drunk anyway? If you want to tell me... of course." @Sharpie
  13. Thessala did what she could do and there was not any way Rana could have asked for more. It was not Thessala's fault their door was locked and it was not Thessala's fault that Rana was not yet among the top gladiatrixes, so she didn't have to be in that cell with those you could afford to loose in an earthr quake. None of that was Thessala's fault. And there was no point in dwelling anyway. You couldn't go back. Rana didn't even know what happened to her body afterwards. She stayed at the ludus, never too far away from this woman right here. She was now touching both of Thessala's arms and a tear rolled down Thessala's cheek. It surprised Rana. She never really saw her friend like that. And she wondered what it was that Thessala needed. It had to be now, for some reason. But Thessala said nothing. Instead she kissed Rana. Now they knew they could touch, they were kissing! At first she was surprised and then she was pulled in by the warmth of a living human being, showing her affection. She returned the soft and lingering kiss and felt she moved closer to Thessala. Her warmth was perfect. Then the kiss broke. Rana couldn't help but smile. So Thessala wanted to kiss her. And Rana had wanted to kiss her too, to be honest! Many times, actually! But what did it mean? She had to know... "Do you... love me?" @Chevi
  14. Almost there hadn't done anything for Rana. She had needed the door to be broken down and it wasn't. It was too late anyway, when it happened, because the walls had crumbled and she'd been buried in rubble. Buried and bloody. It had been so strange, in the beginning. She'd seen herself. But she hadn't known what was going on and it was all so confusing. Time had passed since then and Rana was more relaxed. Until now anyway; until today, when Thessala heard and saw her. Why today of all days? It wasn't like Rana had been gone. Something must have shifted in the odd spirit-world. Thessala's breath caught too and she said she was sorry, but Rana just smiled, even if it was a sad smile, "You did what you could." Rana said softly and then she'd reached out a hand to touch Thessala's arm. And she could feel it. Could Thessala feel her fingers too? Their eyes met and she smiled again, when Thessala said she could. Rana came closer then, placing fingers on Thessala's other arm too. "I think... I need you to tell me something. Or you need to tell me something. I don't know if there will be another chance." She didn't know if Thessala would see or hear her again, when she had not until now. She didn't know if it would be like this tomorrow. She wanted to be near Thessala but she also felt strangely tired sometimes, as if she wanted to rest but couldn't. And she felt now that it was because of Thessala. @Chevi
  15. The stranger said he would not object to it, if Alexius would keep him company - but then said Alexius had better places to be than here. Alexius just smiled, "Actually I don't, not today anyway. Come, let's find a table." Alexius said and looked around. The place wasn't packed yet and he took a seat near the doorway. Honestly one of his preferred seats, because if there was trouble inside or outside, he could easily reach the door. And he placed himself so he could see who came and went. Alexius liked that. He waited for his new companion to follow, hoping he would. "I'm Alexius by the way, and you... or am I to call you moody stranger all day?" He added with a grin. Of course he wanted to know what was wrong with this young man here, but he would not ask into it straight away. That wouldn't be very sensible or natural or kind at all, really. They had only just met and the other guy didn't know Alexius - and wasn't in a cheerful mood. Alexius wouldn't risk anything. @Sharpie
  16. The dark-haired and skinny looking stranger said he didn't plan on drinking all of the wine in one go. Alexius doubted he'd take breaks though, but of course, he didn't know the stranger yet. By the sound of it though, he planned on getting very drunk. He said there was not enough wine in Rome and Alexius wondered what the poor guy had gone through, to want to drink more wine than all of Rome contained. "There is a lot of wine in Rome though. A lot of good places to get it." Alexius replied with a little smile, while the barkeep showed up, first with a bowl of today's stew for Alexius and then with the wine they both ordered. A mug for Alexius and a jug for the other guy. He glanced around the popina and while there were always people here, he didn't see anyone he knew besides those who worked here. "Do you want company?" He asked the stranger then, because, why not? @Sharpie
  17. For Alexius, this was a day like most others. And some days he worked, some he did not - he had yet to find himself a steady job after the job as Oriana's bodyguard. Hopefully there would soon be some Senator or his beautiful wife who'd need protection from someone experienced and skilled like Alexius. Until then, he took the work he could get. And today was a day without any work. So after he'd sent Lexus off to his job, Alexius slept a little longer and then made his way out to find something to do. Maybe meet someone who had work for him on the way... but although he met people he knew, he didn't get any work. And so he eventually ended up at the Popina Via Lata and decided it was about time he had a meal and a drink. He entered the place, still looking neat as it was early in the day and he winked at one of his favorite barmaids and made his way to the counter, "I'd like a meal... and a drink. You know what I like." Alexius said with a smile to the barkeep and looked at a young man next to him. Sort of skinny with dark hair and sad eyes. And he'd heard him just before he arrived at the counter, the other man ordered a whole jug of wine. For his size! He'd be drunk in no time, and so early in the day? Alexius felt he ought to say something to him, he already felt sorry for him and he didn't even know him! "That's a lot of wine to drink so early in the day." Alexius commented to the stranger by his side, while they both waited for their orders. @Sharpie
  18. Early November, 75 AD Today was just yet another ordinary day in the life of Marcus Barbatius, one of countless professional barbers in Rome. Some just had their shops in the street, but Marcus had his very own shop and insula just above it. Quite a nice insula too. One bedroom for himself, another for all the slaves, a small cooking area, a tablinum and a triclinium. And a few spare rooms for storage and other things. Then there was the shop. Large enough to hold a chair for clients in the middle of the room and shelves and tables and many little pots and flasks with salves and oils and everything else he needed for the business. And then the box with all the knives and razors in it. The key hung steadily around his neck and Aculia would have to ask, if she needed a knife to cook with. He once had a slave cut his own throat, which he had absolutely no right to, so Marcus had to keep the knives locked up at all times, so it would not happen again. The slaves were his property. They had no right to take their own lives while he was their master. But luckily, that was already years ago and life went on. Even with what he did recently, to that girl. Yet that was also in the past now and all he had was the lingering memory of her and her blood. He was thinking about that when he opened the shop this morning, which put him in a good mood and he was even whistling when he opened the door. His head slave or favorite slave, Manus, was already busy getting the shop ready for the first client. Now all they had to do was wait for someone to walk in the door. @Sains
  19. She wondered if she could really touch Thessala and if she'd feel it. If Thessala would feel it and if Rana would. But did she dare? Would she be disappointed? Meanwhile Thessala was looking at her, Rana, who was right in front of her again, strangely present and yet ethereal at the same time. As if she was floating rather than standing. She asked what Thessala needed from her, since she said she needed many things earlier. Thessala sighed, said she didn't know. She told about the day, that day, how she'd tried to get to Rana and Rana nodded. "I know. I heard your voice." She felt her voice almost broke as she said it and she looked away. She remembered that day. The day everything went black. And then she was... here but not here. Now Thessala called her a spirit. But she wasn't surrounded by others like her. Maybe not everyone who died ended up like this. She blinked, but she felt unable to cry. She had no tears to cry. Instead she did what she thought about earlier. She reached out with her hand to touch Thessala's arm. She was warm and there were scratches and sprays of dried blood there. She ran her fingers over it and looked up at Thessala again, "Can you... feel my hand?" @Chevi
  20. Oh Clio, she was probably more into Lexus that she would admit - even to herself! But Thalia saw her blushing and it was not hard for her to guess what was going on. She wanted that kind of feeling too, but while some men could make her blush, it was just because of what they said and the attention they gave. It was not their mere presence that did it. She felt no butterflies. She was sure Clio felt butterflies! She nudged her sister playfully and asked more into their current situation, but Clio said she had not known he'd be here although this was where they met. Then she claimed she did not know if she fancied him. "I'm pretty sure you do!" Thalia said with a grin and tried to move some of the items in her basket around to make it look nicer. She then leaned a little closer to Clio, "You're blushing and stumbling over your words. I think it's pretty obvious." She said with a wink and looked towards Lexus, who was talking to people in different camps as if he'd always done it. @Chevi
  21. Wulfric knew it was his ancestor who led to the loss of three Roman legions in the forests of Germania. But he had not known the man and he had no other connections to him but a name. He, along with many other tribes and people in his part of the world, agreed that it was a good thing that Germania Major was not a part of Rome. They could trade and be friendly - his mother had been very friendly with his father - but in the long run, the people of Germania were not ruled by Rome. And that was because of a mistake by his ancestor named Varus. He didn't feel bad about it. So why should his new friend? He pointed out that something good came out of a Varus visiting Germania in this round; Wulfric was the result. Iophon grinned and quoted the infamous Iulius Caesar, of whom he'd heard stories too of course. Iophon said Wulfric's father would not mind having Wulfric for a son, since he came such a long way to meet him. And then he wondered if Wulfric had a trade. "I am warrior, back in Germania. My mother, daughter to our chief... our king. I am his guard... when I not here." He added with a smile, but he had more to add to that, "The king still alive. His brother also. But if they die, Wotan forbid... I will be king. Much responsibility." @Chevi
  22. In her strange state of being, Rana had not really considered what she was. And that she might be a spirit. She just... was? Existing? So when Thessala pointed out that spirits could not read thoughts, she just looked at her and shook her head, "No?" Why should she be able to do that, when she couldn't before? But what she noticed was also that Thessala had smiled. She had barely seen her smile since the earthquake, but there it was, a smile on Thessala's pretty face. Well, maybe not so 'pretty' right now, since she was made all up for a fight in the arena. Rana liked looking at her anyway though. She explained she hadn't been gone and would not be gone when Thessala finished her fight. Promised she'd be here. And that seemed to be enough for Thessala. The fight continued. The other gladiatrix seemed surprised at Thessala's hard attacks and Thessala gave her quite a large gash in the thigh, more or less ending the fight with that. The crowd loved it, but then it was over and they seemed almost disappointed. Rana however was on the blood before she barely registered she did it, and it was like she felt more and more like her, again. It was only when the other gladiatrix left the arena that Rana looked up and saw Thessala leave. Fuck, she promised she'd be there. She hurried after her friend, finding her leaning against the wall and she asked a question into the faint light of the corridor. "Yes." Rana replied and came up to her, tilting her head, "Thessala... what is wrong? What do you need from me?" @Chevi
  23. Alexius' constant smile stayed on, with the way Felix looked at him when he said he'd not mind taking a bath with the lovely Felix. But that wouldn't be right now. Alexius was amused though, about how many ideas he had for things he and Felix could do together, if they met again. Popinas, baths and other ideas too. Really he could also just take Felix home. That was one of his other favorite places, he supposed... the home he shared with his son. But now they'd reached the gates to a ludus and Alexius stopped and wondered if Felix had ever been such a place before. Felix gave him a curious look and Alexius nodded at his question. "I was a gladiator here, yes. And then lanista. I still come here... it holds many memories. Both bad... and good." He added and Felix said he'd never been inside a ludus. "We're not going inside either. But see..." Alexius gestured the way to a doorway in the wall and a staircase, leading up to where there were seats for curious people who wanted to watch the gladiators while they trained. It was free to watch them train, it was only in the arena you had to pay to see them fight, "After you." Alexius said elegantly and waited for Felix to enter before he'd follow, "I don't know how many are training today. Maybe some of them are also at the festival. We'll see." @Chevi
  24. Thessala claimed it wasn't his fault that it wasn't him she wanted to fuck, if anyone. It was apparently just because of his gender. She slapped him on the shoulder, as if they were old friends, but the truth was they just met and things were not going well for any of them. And wouldn't either. She was a slave. He was a freedman with no job, no wife, no life... nothing. Even his old master was long gone, he couldn't just go back to him either. There was nothing. He didn't reply to her statement but suggested to leave her on her own and he didn't think she needed a guard anyway. She suggested he might need a guard and he gave her a look. He didn't need a guard. Both because he could fend for himself and maybe also that despite that, he maybe didn't want to. Thessala kept being strangely compassionate, wondering if he was good and said he was a good man and she would walk him home. "No brothels for me. My wife... her former master owned a brothel. He wasn't kind." Manius said. That he wasn't kind was putting it very nicely. He'd abused Salacia... and the girls and boys at the brothel. No, Manius would not go to such places, "I'll go home. You can walk with me if you want. But I don't need a guard." @Chevi
  25. Teutus promised to think about it all and let Tertius know what he’d do. And he concluded it all by stating he had nothing else he needed to say. So that’s that. Teutus knew his new brother would be freed by Tertius on the 9th day after the birth and that Teutus would never truly become Tertius’ heir. The closest to it was the fact that Teutus would be the guardian of his younger siblings, should Tertius be gone before they grew up – and before Antonia married. And meanwhile, Teutus would find his own place to live and his own trade. And he seemed so intent on it, needing it even, that Tertius would not stop him. Even if he had hoped his son and he could have a better relationship now, it seemed as if it would never happen. “I don’t think I have more to say right now either… son.” Tertius then replied, “I have to return to my work too. Remember if you ever have any questions or anything you need to talk about, I’m right here.” He paused, then added, “I expect you’ll be around for dinner later.” He added with a smile. And by those words, Teutus probably knew him well enough to know he’d been dismissed, for now. That was that. @Sharpie
